Description

J. F. CARPMILL.
BIT.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 31. IBM- Patented May 28,1918.

JOHN F. CARFMILL, OF BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE NORTH &; JUDD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
Application fi1ed July 31, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. CARPMILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain, new and useful Improvements in Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bits. The main object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which can be inexpensively, readily and quickly made and which possesses the requisite strength.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification I have shown in detail one of the several convenient forms of embodiment of the invention, which to enable those skilled in the art to practice the same will be set forth fully in the following description. I do not restrict myself to this exact disclosure; I may depart therefrom in several respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claim following said description.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a bit involving the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said bit, and
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 83 of Fig. 1.
Like characters refer to throughout the several views.
The bit involves in its makeup cheeks like parts such as those denoted in a general way by 2,,
and a mouth-piece or bit proper as 3. One of the motives I have in view is the construction of the article in a very inexpensive manner. This result Ican achieve while maintaining the requisite strength or rigidity. In the form of the article selected for illustration herein, it consists merely of two parts or pieces, and while these can be of any suitable material, I prefer as a matter of advantage that they be of wire of the necessary grade and preferably circular, or virtually so, in cross section. These two members are denoted by 4 and 5 respectively and are practically of duplicate construction, although they face oppositely. Each has a transverse portion 6 and two terminal portions 7 and 8, the terminal portion 7 of Specification of Letters Patent.

the part or element 4: cooperating with the terminal portion 8 of the part 5 and the other terminal portions 7 and 8 also cooperating with each other to constitute as will hereii'iafter more particularly appear, the checks 2. I might observe at this point that the portions 7 are provided at their ends with eyes 9 which are in alinement transversely and which act as rings to receive the chee rs of a bridle. The portions 8 also terminate in eyes 10 which act as rein rings or to receive the driving reins of said bridle, which likewise are in transverse alinement. The respective eyes can be formed either before or after the sections 1- and 5 are connected with each other. As I say the said sections 4- and 5 initially are of zigzag form, the terminal portions 7 and 8 of the respective members extending oppositely from the ends of the transverse or connecting member 6. These two transverse or connecting members 6 are intercoiled, intertwisted or intertwined as indicated by 11, so as to present a mouth-piece or bit proper as 3 to which I have already referred. The intercoiling of the two portions 6 is one way of uniting them in a substantial and solid fashion and does not in any manner affect their efficiency. Just short of the ends of the coiled portion 11 the parts 6 diverge outwardly and are then deflected laterally so that the parts 7 and 8 respectively are brought into coincidence or line with each other.
While the mouthpiece of the bit comprises a plurality of intercoiled portions which is a desirable construction, this might not always be necessary. The invention as to one of its features comprises a bit which has merely two parts or main parts and which. collectively present the mouthpiece and the cheeks. As will be understood in any event, however, the invention involves certain broad principles.
What I claim is:
A. bit comprising two zigzag elements, the transverse portions of the elements being intercoiled to present the mouth-piece of the bit, two end portions cooperating to present one check of the bit and the other two end portions cooperating to present the other In testimony whereof I afiix my signature cheek of the bit, each of ttipe 1end poigtions in the presence of two Witnesses. terminating in an e e, two 0 tie eyes eing adapted to receive b-ridle cheeks, and the JOHN CARPMILL' other tWo being adapted to receive driving Witnesses:
reins, the end. portions Which cooperate as GEORGE W. Tnoor,
bit cheeks being'approximately' coaxial. JOHN J. CREAN.
