To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. TROGDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toccoa, in the county of Stephen and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wood working machines, and has particular reference to an improved power feed attachment for hand jointers.
The invention has for an object to provide an attachment of this character which insures the positive feeding of the lumber to the cutter and thereby increases the capacity of the machine and the quality of the work.
Another object of this invention is to construct a feed attachment so that in the use of the same, injury to the hands of the operator is practically avoided, as the roller automatically accommodates itself to the slight variations in the lumber fed into the machine, and material adjustments are made by the improved adjusting mechanism which is located at a distance from the rollers and the cutting mechanism.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved feed attachment applied to a jointer table, the dotted lines disclosing the attachment in an inoperative position; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the feeding attachment, parts of the same being shown in section; and, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a jointer table having a transverse cutting mechanism' 11. Arranged at the opposite sides of the table 10 are registering standards 12 and 13. The standards are provided at their lower ends with supporting webs 14 carrying clamping screws 15. The clamping screws 15 are detachably engaged in the upper face of the table 10 so as to admit of the detachment of the standards 12 and 13. A power shaft 16 iscjournaled in the upper ends of the standards 12 and 13 and extends slightly beyond the standard 13 to support a drive pulley 17 The shaft 16 carries a U-shaped frame, the sidebars 18 of which are hingedly mounted at their free ends upon the shaft 16 and against the outer faces of the standards 12 t and 13. The cross bar 19 of the U-shaped frame is provided with an outwardly eX- tending bail 20 for the reception of the hand of the operator in raising the frame. The cross bar 19 is provided midway of its endswith a pair of upwardly extending ears 21, through which passes a pin 22 supporting the lower apertured end of a suspension rod 23. 1Therod 23 passes loosely through the outer endof a swinging arm 24 and is adjustably carried thereby by means of a crank nut 25. The crank nut 25 engages over the upper threaded portion of the suspension rod 23 and against the upper face of the arm 24. A post 26 is carried at one edge of the table 10 and pivotally supports upon its upper extremity, the arm 24.
The U-shaped frame carries a transverse roller shaft 27 which is spaced from the bar 19 and loosely supports a plurality of independent rollers which are carried in the frame. An intermediate shaft 28 is mounted in the frame midway of the ends of the side bars 18 and carries a plurality of arms 29. The arms 29 terminate in sleeves 30 at their inner ends engaging over the shaft 28 so as to hingedly support the arms 29. The outer ends of the arms 29 are enlarged and provided with threaded openings loosely engaging about the roller shaft 27 and receiving the threaded extremities of bushings 31 loosely disposed above the roller shaft 27. The bushings 31 are in the form of sleeves having out-turned flanges 32 upon their outer ends and support a pair of spaced disks 33. Interposed between the disks 33, and preferably integrally formed therewith, are sprockets 34 adapted to move in unison with the-disks 33. The outer disk 33 is recessed in its outer face to receive the flange 32 to flush the outer end of the bushing 31 with the outer face of the disk. As will be observed from Fig. 2, the shaft 27 is provid ed with a plurality of rollers of this construction, and the intermediate shaft 28 carries a corresponding number of arms 29. The bushings 31 are loosely disposed about the. shaft 27 in order to admit of a slight play of the rollers within the frame to accommodate variations in the lumber which is passed over the jointer table 10. As the arms 29 are hinged upon the intermediate shaft 28, the rollers are permitted to fall by their own weight. The power shaft 16 carries a plurality of collars 35 upon which are disposed sprocket wheels 36. The sprocket wheels 36 are arranged in registration with the sprockets 34 and in conjunction therewith carry chains 37. A belt 38, or other power transmitting device passes over the pulley 17 to impart movement to the power shaft 16.
The operation of the device is apparent for as the shaft 16 revolves, the sprockets 36 are carried therewith and cause the rotation of the rollers by the chains 37. The rollers are carried upon the outer ends of the arms 29 and are permitted to rise and fall to ac commodate themselves to the variations in the thickness of the lumber which is passed over the jointer table 10. Material adjustments are made by the crank nut 25 which moves the suspension rod 23 vertically to raise and lower the U-shaped frame. The arm 24- is pivoted upon the post 26 so as to dispose the suspension rod 23 substantially in vertical alinement with the cars 21.
To throw the feed attachment out of op eration, the pin 22 is withdrawn from the.
cars 21 to release the suspension rod 23 from the frame. The arm 2& is now swung outframe from the table as is disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The Ushaped frame is held upward by rests 89 which are carried by the standards 12 and 13, extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A j ointer table feed attachment including a U-shaped frame hinged above the table, a roller shaft mounted in the outer end of the frame, a plurality of rollers loosely mounted upon the roller shaft, operating means arranged in the frame for rotating the rollers, and supporting means carried by the table and connected to the outer end of the frame for vertically adjusting the same.
2. A feed attachment for jointer tables including transversely registering standards carried upon the table, a power shaft journaled in the standards, a U-shaped frame hinged upon the ends of the shaft, spaced sprockets mounted upon the shaft, a roller shaft carried in the outer end of the frame, an intermediate shaft carried by the side bars of the frame midway of the ends thereof, hinged arms mounted upon the intermediate shaft, independent rollers disposed upon the outer ends of the arms and loosely about the roller shaft, sprockets formed upon the rollers, and chains passing over the sprockets on the rollers and said first sprockets to impart rotation to said rollers.
3. A feed attachment for hand jointers including a pair of standards, a shaft journaled in the standards, a U shaped frame hinged upon the shaft, independent rollers mounted in transverse alinement in the outer end of the frame, a post carried by the jointer table adjacent to the frame, a swinging arm mounted upon the upper end of the post, a suspension rod adjus'tably depending from the outer end of the swinging arm and being connected to the outer end of the hinged frame, and operating means disposed between the shaft and the rollers for independently rotating the same.
4. A feed attachment for hand jointers including a hinged frame transversely car ried upon the jointer table, rollers loosely mounted in transverse alinement in the outer end of the frame, operating means connected to the rollers, a post carried at one side of the jointer table, a swinging arm mounted upon the upper end of the post, a suspension rod depending from the outer end of the arm and having an upper threaded extension, acrank nut disposed upon the upper end of the suspension rod and resting upon the upper face of the swinging arm, spaced ears carried upon the outer end of the frame to receive the lower extremity of the suspension rod, and a pin engaging through the ears and said suspension rod to connect the frame thereto.
5. A feed attachment for hand jointers including spaced detachable standards transversely arranged upon the jointer table, a power shaft journaled in the upper ends of the standards, said standards having rearwardly and upwardly extending rests, a frame hinged upon the shaft and adapted for engagement against the rest-s, a roller shaft disposed in the outer end of the frame, a plurality of independent rollers loosely mounted about the roller shaft, an intermediate shaft arranged transversely in the frame, arms loosely carried upon the inter mediate shaft and connected independently to the rollers for supporting the same, and means arranged between the power shaft and the rollers for rotating the latter.
6. A feed attachment for jointer tables including spaced detachable standards carried in transverse alinement upon the table, a shaft journaled in the upper ends of the standards, a frame hinged upon the shaft and overhanging the table, adjustable supporting means carried by the table and connected to the outer end of the frame for adjustably spacing the same from the table, a plurality of loose rollers arranged in trans verse alinement in the frame, and independ ent operating means carried in the frame and connected to the rollers.
7. A feed attachment for hand jointers including a hinged frame spaced above the jointer table, a suspension rod adjustably carried by the table and connected to the outer-end of the frame for spacing the same from thetable, independent rollers mounted in the frame to receive strips of lumber therebeneath, means for rotating the rollers carried by the frame, a roller shaft disposed .in the frame and engaging loosely through the rollers to admit of a slight rise and fall of the same to accommodate the rollers to variations in the thickness of the lumber,
