ATTACHMENT FOR MOLDING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,894, dated November 4, 1890.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE POPPERT, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Molding-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to molding-machines; and it consists in an oscillating attachment therefor, as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I is alongit-udinal vertical section through a portion of a molding-machine having my improvement attached thereto on the line l l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse section (partlybroken away) on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a similar section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
In said drawings I have deemed it necessary to illustrate only so much of a moldingmachine as suffices to show my attachment, as the said machine may be of any ordinary construction for the manufacture of moldings such as are made in planing-mills and other wood-working establishments.
A represents part of the frame of such a machine, which in this instance is provided with a longitudinal slot ct in its upper surface.
B B are bearings on said frame, in which is journaled the cutter-head shaft C, said shaft and its cutter-head (which latter may be of any preferred construction, according to the form of molding to be out, and which is not shown in the drawings) extending over the table D, which receives the strips of wood in which the molding is to be cut.
E is the driving-pulley of said cutter-head shaft, driven by any suitable belting. (Not shown.) The top of my table D is vperfectly level, but formed with a slot or opening b, through which the pins or teeth c c on the periphery of a wheel F project up, said wheel being mounted fast on a shaft d, journaled in the supporting-frame of the table D; and also fast on said shaft d is a gear-wheel G in mesh with a pinion H, fast on a shaft e, which is likewise journaled in the supporting-frame of the table D below the shaft d and projecting through said frame and the standards of the frame A below and in line with the shaft C. Near its inner end the shafteis provided with a wheel I, having a spiral groove fin its periphery.
J is a hanger suspended by the horizontally-perforated hubs g g on its vertical arms from the shaft C, and secured rigidly in place thereon by the adjustable collars K K and set-screws 7L h, saidhanger J having a downwardly-projecting arm L, terminating in a vertically-perforated hub lL', which receives a guide-rodj, secured thereto by a set-screw 7c, and having preferably a roller m onts lower end, which is in engagement with the spiral groove f in the wheel I.
The operation of my device will be readily understood from the foregoing description of its construction. The shaft C carrying the cutter-head will, be understood as being in continuous revolution. The strip of Wood which is to have a molding cut thereon is placed on the table D and fedforward over the teeth c o of the wheel F,- which catch into the under side of said strip7 the feeding of which revolves said wheel F and its shaft d, and with it the gear-wheel G, also on said shaft CZ, which gear-wheel revolves the pinion H and shaft e, to which said pinion is fast, thereby revolving the spirally-grooved wheel I on the other end of said shaft e, and consequently through the described guide-rod and hanger, causing the shaft C to reciprocate in its bearings B B transversely to the direction of feed of the material, and the cutter-head borne by said shaft is thus caused to cut the molding in a waving or oscillating line corresponding tothe groove f in the wheel I. Of course, to vary this Waving line it is only necessary to substitute for wheel I another wheel with a different groove f, and, as already stated, any preferred form of cutterhead may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what4 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Y In a molding-machine, the combination of a longitudinally-reciprocatory revoluble cutter-shaft, a revoluble shaft carrying a cam, an arm pendent from said cutter-shaft, a shaft carrying atoothed wheel and actuated wholly IOO by Contact with the material to be grooved, the county of Milwaukee and.
