PIN-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application filed July 11, 1910. Serial No.'571,279.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, TILLIAM C. STUCKEL,
.a citizen of the United States, residingat Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 1nvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, an to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- This invention relates to an improved protector or fender for the ends of hat pins, and is adapted to" be afiixed to the point of the pin where the point projects beyond the wearers hat, and when so affixed, to act as a protection against the accidental injury of any one who might come in contact with the pin point.
The device is a thimble or ferrule which has a closed end and is filled from side to side with material that is somewhat elastic and is adapted to be penetrated by a pm point, and which, when so penetrated, clings made smaller at its closed end than it is at its open end, and the grasping material fitting closely in the thimble, the fit of the pin oint in the material becomes tighter as it is orced in. The surface of the-material that is presented tothe pin point extends from side to side of the thimble and the whole surface of the material is presented to the pin point and-n0 time is wasted finding an entrance for the pin point, as it can be forced into the material at any point. This feature also admits of the utilization of all 'the'material, that is apt to be used as much on its edges as at the center. The thimble can be provided with a flaring open end, if desired, so as to facilitate the placing of the thimble on the pin.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whichend and a head 12 on the other end. The thimble 13 is made of any suitable material, preferably metal, and can be ornamented as desired. The thimble has an open end and a closed end and is preferably tapered toward its closed end so that it forms a truncated cone. The thimble has a block of material 14 therein which can be fixed by an adhesive or driven in and held by its own friction on the sides, since an elastic material is used to make up the block. The material best adapted for the purpose. is cork, but other materials might be employed. The whole block fills the thimble from side to side and presents its whole imperforate transverse area for penetration by the in point 11. The narrowing formation of the thimble makes the pin fit tighter as it goes in and causes a tight binding of the thimble on the pin, through the adhesion of the material 14 in the block, to the pin, this being evident from Fig. 3. The construction which thus permits the whole surface of the material 14 to be available gives long life to the block of cork or the like, since the whole surface is used up and not any particular channel in it. If desired the open end of the thimblecan be made with a flare, as at 15 in Fig. 4-, which facilitates the finding of the cork by the pin, and thus makes the device more convenient for use.
The tapered construction of the thimble causes the block of elastic material to be compressed on its inner end when it is forced in the rocessof manufacture, to its place in the thimble so that the tight compression which increases toward the small end of the tapered thimble, and of the block, causes elastic material forced into the thimble and compressed on the inner end by reason of the taper of the thimble, the block of elastic material having its whole transverse surface l 5 the block whereby vthe pin point is prevented, \Vitnesses:
