UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. C. BENDT, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
AUTOMATIC-ALARM DRIP-PAN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. C. BENDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Alarm Drip Pans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drip pans for use in connection with refrigerators and the like, and has for its object to provide an alarm, and means for actuating the same when the water from the melted ice should be decanted to prevent overflow.
With the foregoing object in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation on the line 11 of Fig; 2 of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the electrical connections being diagrammatically shown, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 1.
A indicates the body part of the pan provided with handles B and C, and divided into compartments 1 and 2 by means of a partition 3, provided on the compartment 1 is a suitable cover 4, secured thereon in any suitable manner such as hinges indicated 5.
Provided on the cover is a contact plate 6, mounted upon which are a pair of standards 7, between which is pivotally secured a rod or lever 8, the rod being secured short one of its ends, the longer portion of which projects partially across the compartment 2, and carries a suitable float 9, by means of a suspending rod 10, adjustably secured on the rod 8, by means of a slide 11, and thumb screw 12, the purpose of which will presently be explained.
Provided on the cover and located at a point under the end 13 of the rod 8 is a contact plate 14, connected by a circuit wire 15, leading and connected to an alarm 16, and from the alarm 16 another wire 17 connects with a battery 18, located in the compartment 1, the battery 18 being connected by a circuit wire 19 to the contact plate 6.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 16, 1911.
"Patented July 4, 1911.
Serial No. 602,775.
My device is operated as follows: The drip water upon accumulating in the compartment 2 will gradually raise the float, which will in turn raise the longer end of the rod or lever 8, and cause the opposite end 13 of the lever to descend. WVhen the danger point has been reached by the drip water, the end 13 of the rod 8 will engage with the contact plate 14, thereby closing the circuit and sounding the alarm. lVhen the water has been decanted from the compartment 2, the float 9 will fail to raise the rod 8, break the contact and stop the alarm.
By means of the slide 11 and the set screw 12, the float 9 may be extended farther across the compartment 2 at a predetermined point desired and the quantity of water in the compartment required to sound the alarm regulated to meet the desired requirements.
Slight changes and alterations might be resorted to in the form and arrangements of the several parts herein described, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exactconstruction as herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A drip pan of the character described, comprising two compartments one of which is provided with a hinged cover, and means supported upon said cover for detecting a predetermined height of water in said pan, said means embodying two contact plates secured upon the top of said cover, a lever pivoted upon one of said contact plates and adapted to engage the other plate, a float adjustably secured to said lever and depending into the uncovered compartment, a battery and an alarm secured to the underside of said cover, and circuit wires connecting said battery and alarm with said contact plates.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. C. BENDT.
