FLOAT-CONTROLLED CIRCUIT-CLOSER.

Be it known that I, WILFRID J. BOUSQUET, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Float-Controlled Circuit-Closers, of which the followiniis a specification. v u.
y resent invention pertains to a float control ed circuit closer, designed more particularly for use in refrigerator alarms, and
ample, it being manifest that my improved circuit closer is adapted to be used in combination with any device in which ice is used, with a view to warning a house wife or servant of the fact that the drip pan 9 of the refrigerator, ice chest or other device requires emptying.
In the present and preferred embodiment 0f the invention, my novel mechanism comprises a vertically-movable rod 2, movable in a guide 3 on the refrigerator and providedl with a terminal 10, and also with a bifurcated upper end 11, a hand lever 12, fulcrumed at 13 on a bracket 14 and having one of its ends disposed in the bifurcation and,
also having a hand grasp at its opposite end,
a iioat 8 disposed in the water in the pan 9,
a lever 5 suitably connected with the fioat and fulcrumed at 6 in a pendent bracket 7 on the refrigerator, and a'terminal 16 electrically insulated from the rod 2 and arranged in a normally open electric circuit with a source of electric energy 15, a bell or other audible or visual signal 17 and the rod 2. When desired a switch 18 may be included in the circuit referred to, but the said switch is not necessary to the successful operation of my invention, and therefore it may be omitted when desired. I would also have it understood that without affecting my invention the battery 15 and the signal 17 may be arranged at any points preferred by the party practising my invention.
With the parts arranged as shown, and the circuit closed or completed through the switch 18, it will be manifest that when the float 8 is raised by unduly high water in the pan 9, the terminal 10 will be loweredinto contact with the terminal 16, whereupon the circuit will be closed and the signal 17 actuated to apprise a person in authority of the necessity of emptying the pan.
When it is desired to remove the pan precedent to emptying the same, it is simply necessary for the operator to raise the outer end of the lever 12 and depress the rod 2 sufficiently to raise the float 8 clear of the pan 9 so that the said float will not interfere with the movement of the pan away from and into the position illustrated. It will be manifest in this connection that the terminal 10 is adapted to wipe past the terminal 16, and consequently the illustrated relative arrangement of the said terminals will not prevent or interfere with the described manual depression of the rod 2.
It` will be gathered from the foregoing that my novel mechanism is reliable in operation, is adapted to be readily installed and is made up of parts which are adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of corresponding character are ordinarily subjected.
The means shownand described for closing the electric circuit and actuating the signal when the rod 2 is lowered is preferred because of its simplicity and inexpensiveness, but I desire it distinctly understoodA that my invention is not limited to the said means or any other specific means for completing the circuit incidental to downward movement of rod 2.
The term terminal as herein employed is intended to comprehend a contact of any description.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A ioat controlled circuit closer. comprising a float, a vertically-movable lever connected with the float. a terminal. a vertically-movable rod adapted to be arranged in a normally open circuit with a source of electric energy and the terminal and having a terminal adapted to coperate with the first-named terminal; said rod being `concally-swinging leverfulcrumed at an inter-y mediatek point of its length on the supporting means, a float carried on one arm of said lever and'adapted t be disposed in a pan arranved under and removable edgewise from 7:ielow the supporting means, a vertically-movable rod guidedon said supporting having` any inner portion constructed and; ai"` rangedon downward movement thereof'to move the rod' downwardly.
