STOP-COCK BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERASTUS L. IVALCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Stop-Cock Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
One object of the present invention is to simplify the construction of stop cock boxes embodying telescopic sections and another object is to provide a simple and efficient means whereby the stop cock box will be held in its proper relation to the stop cock and the key properly guided to engage the cock when the latter is to be manipulated.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a sectional elevation of a stop cock box embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective of the lower end of the box showing the construction of the centering clamp. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the upper end of the box and cap.
Similar letters of reference indicate-the same parts in all the figures.
The lower half or body A of the box may conveniently be a tubular casting having a packing box or chamber a at the upper end through which the upper or telescoping sec tion B of the box may slide for adjusting the length of the box to the depth of the cock below the surface of the roadway. The section B may conveniently be of ordinary pipe or tubing threaded at the upper end for the reception of a flange C upon which the cap or cover D seats.
F or securing the cap in place so that it will be held firmly and still be readily removed it is, together with its flange, made of inexpensive material, for instance, simple iron castings. The flange is formed with oppositely projecting lugs or ears 0 and the cap is formed with recesses (Z for the reception of the lugs and inclined channels (Z into which the lugs may pass when the cap is given a partial rotation after being seated on the flange. Both the flange and the cap may be removed and others substituted in case of breakage without the necessity of disturbing the lower portions of the box.

is enlarged somewhat as is usual in boxes of this type, thereby forming a chamber A which partly incloscs or surrounds the cock. Various expedients have heretofore been employed to center and hold the lower end of the box in its proper relation to the cock and to provide a guide for the end of the key employed to operate the cock, but such expedients where eflicient for the purposes intended have usually been only applicable to cocks of special construction or were complicated and expensive.
In accordance with the present invention, wherein the objections noted have been overcome, a downwardly tapered clamp is provided which at its upper end telescopes into the chamber in the body and at its lower end clamps the body of the stop cock around the base of the handle, thereby leaving the latter free to turn within the chamber formed by the upwardly projecting walls of the clamp.
In the preferred construction, the clamp is formed in two sections 'E, E each substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section and having their lower ends turned inwardly at F to form jaws for engaging the stop cock body. Bolts G passing through lugs g serve to draw the jaws together and secure the device to the stop cock and cooperating project-ions c at the upper end serve as pivotal points about which the sections turn when the jaws are moved, although it will be understood that the parts may be and preferably are elastic not only to conform to the shape of the part clamped but to facilitate cooperation with parts of different Sue.
The diameter of the upper end of the clamp is preferably greater than that of the upper or telescoping section of the box, and of a size to enter the chamber at the lower end of the body with sufficient freedom to prevent binding. The clamp thus serves as j the centering means for the box without 1 binding the box to the pipe or stop cock and it also forms a continuation of the body of the box thus serving as a guide for the key used to manipulate the stop cook. The upper l end wall of the clamp lies under the shoull der forming the top of the chamber at the llower end of the body and as a consequence the key will not pass down outside of the 1 clamp or be caught by the edge of the latter. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A stop cock box embodying an integral cylindrical body having an enlarged chamber at the lower end and a clamp for the stop cock separate from and independent of the cylindrical body having clamping jaws at its lower end and an upwardly extending substantially circular body fitting entirely within the enlarged chamber and forming an extension of the body' of the box.
2. A stop cock box embodying a cylindrical body having an enlarged chamber at the lower end and a clamping member having a round body fitting entirely in said chamber to form an extension of the body of the box and adjustable clamping jaws at the lower end with means carried by the jaws whereby they may be adjusted to clamp the stop cock.
8. A stop cock box embodying a cylindrical body and a clamp having a circular body telescoping into the lower end of the body of the box and forming an extension thereof, said clamp having jaws at its lower end and a screw for securlng the aws in posltion on the stop cock whereby an unobstructed passage for the key is provided.
4. A stop cock box embodyinga cylindrical body having an enlarged chamber at the lower end and a sectional tapered clamp telescoping into said chamber and having stop cock engaging jaws at its lower end and screws for securing the sections of the clamp together and to the stop cock.
5. In a stop cock box, the combination with the body having the enlarged chamber at the lower end, of the clamp having the upwardly extending wall substantially circular in cross-section and fitting entirely within the chamber and inwardly extending clamping jaws at the lower end, said clamp forming a continuation of the body of the box, and means whereby the jaws may be closed to clamp the body of the stop cock.
6. In a stop cock box, the combination with the body and upper section telescoping into the same and having its upper end threaded, a flange screwed on the threaded end of the extension and having radial lugs thereon and a cap inclosing said flange and having recesses and inclined passages for the reception of the lugs whereby the cap is removably retained in place and surrounds and incloses the flange.
