TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JOS F. DE NAVARRO, of the city, county, and State' of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Attaching Pumps to Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specifica-tion, and in Which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a tapering sleeve,.constructed according to my improvement,

and as applied to the bung-hole of a cask, with a pump-pipe' arranged therein and clamped thereby.

In pumping liquids or uids from easks, barrels, and other like close vessels, it is not only necessary that the pipe ofthe pump should be projected through the bung-hole, to or near the bottom of the cask, but that said pipe should be clamped or held steady,.more especially at its fit through the bung-hole, to withstand the shocks and vibrations consequent upon pumping, with adequate provision against leakage. This has, in part, before been met bythe employment of a threaded nut orcollaron the pipe, arranged to screw vinto the bung-hole; also by the use of a loose screw-sleeve, of conical form on its exterior, and provided with a set-screw at its side for clamping the pipe, which is passed lo'ose through the sleeve, that serves as a plug to the bung-hole. But my invention essentially diifers from both of these previous devices, by employing a loose screw-sleeve of conical or taper form, made in'longitudinal sections or halves, dowelled together, to guide them in meeting or approaching each other, and provided with air-ducts or passages, and clamping-ribs o1' formations internally, so that the screwing of the two sections into or through the bung-hole of the cask will cause the-divided sleeve to firmly hold and gripe the pipe in a divided manner, as regards its biting surface on the latter, thus preventing injury to the same, and whereby the necessity of working or adjusting a separate clamping-screw is avoided, and the device made automatically to accommodate itself to diierent sizes of pipe and diametersof bung-hole.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A A are the two halves or sections of my improved sleeve, 'of conical or taper form, when brought together, and preferably with a screw-thread on their exterior, said sections being guided and held together by suitable dowel-pins, a, projecting from theone section, and arranged to freely t corresponding holes in the other section, also being furnished, say, with handles or cars, '6, or otherwise suitably constructed, to facilitate the screwing of the split sleeve into the bung-hole. are constructed internally with air-ducts, c, running down or through them, and with ribs or gripiugr-surfaces,I

d, arranged to clip thepipe in an easy and spread or divided mannerf at different points or lines around, throughout, it may be, the greater portion of the pipe, or portion of the same passing through the sleeve In this' way is the pipe firmly clamped without injury to its surface, and the gripe ofthe same automatically established, that is, by the mere act of screwing the split sleeve into or through the bung-hole, and the device made readily to adapt itself to different sizes of bung-holes and pipes without depriving it of the necessary airvent or vents. i i.

Said suction-pipe may be extended to the lower levelor bottom of the cask, and be perforated at its sides, or otherwise suitably coistructed, to lallow of the free ingress of tlie'liquid through or near its bottom.

What is here claimed, and desired to bevsccured by Letters Patent, is-

The. clamping-sleeve A, of two or more parts, dcwellcd together, `and of conical exterior, with internal griping-ribs or projections, for clamping the suction-pipe of the` pump, 4substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
