Description

A. HOYER. ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT FOR SMOKE SHELLS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 6, 1910.

ANTON I-IOYER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT FOR SMOKE-SHELLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1911.
Application filed May 6, 1910. Serial No. 559,884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ANTON Horne, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Supports for Smoke-Shells, of which the following is a complete specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide means for supporting smoke shells above gas or other flame lights to protect the ceiling of the room from injury due to smoke and heat from the flame; to provide an adjustable support for smoke shells which may be easily adjusted to bring the shell directly over the fiame; to provide means for supporting smoke shells without attaching them to the ceiling; and to provide a very cheap, simple and effective device which is capable of being detachably mounted on the gas pipe or fixture stem.
A specific construction embodying the in vention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the adjustable support. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the support. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan View of the adjustable support adapted to support four shells.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of the support adapted to support two shells.
In the construction shown the support comprises two bars or other members 1 and 2, which are telescopingly connected together to permit the support to be adjusted longitudinally. Said members may be of any preferred construction and material, but as shown they each comprise a bar or strip of metal having sufiicient rigidity to prevent its bending under the weight of the shell, and the adjacent or overlapping ends of the members are forked. The prongs 3 and 4: of the forks are spread apart and bent around the upper and lower edges of the adjacent member, so as to secure the members together but permit each to slide through the fork of the other.
The free end 5 of the member 1 is bent around the gas pipe 6 and is brought back against the member and is secured thereto in gripping or clamping engagement about the pipe by means of a loop 7.wl1ich is slidably mounted on the member and is adapted and a short clamping is provided which case, in order to have them at the same height, the members 1 are formed of a single bar 10 which is curved centrally at 11 to conform to one side of the gas pipe 6,
bar 12 is curved centrally at 13, and oppositely from the bar 10 to conform to the opposite side'of the pipe. The ends of the bar 12 lie flat against the bar 10 and are secured thereto by means of loops 7.
Where it is desired to employ four supports, as shown in Fig. 5, each member 1 is bent near its free end 14. to provide a portion 15 at an angle of 45 degrees to the main portion of the member, and said end is bent at an angle of 90 degrees to the member. Each portion 15 is provided with a slightly curved portion 16 adjacent to the pipe 6. When the members 1 are arranged about the pipe with the end 1% of each member lying against the next adjacent member, the members may be secured in position by the clamping loops 7 The same method may be employed for attaching three supports to the pipe.
The operation of the construction shown is as follows: The member 1 is clamped to the pipe by'means of the loop 7, which, when forced toward the pipe and over the end of the member, binds the member firmly against the pipe. In this manner the device may be quickly clamped to pipes of various sizes. The member 2 may then be adjusted to bring the hook 8 to the desired distance. from the pipe to support the smoke shell directly above the flame.
While but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described it will be understood that various details of the construction shown may be varied or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
