HERMAN L. I-IOHLFELD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAMIVIOCK-COUCI-I.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN L. HOHL- FELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock- Couches, of which the following is a full, clear, and complete disclosure, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a hammock couch of simple and cheap construction having an adjustable head rest at one or at each of two opposite ends of the couch; to provide a hammock couch having an adjustable head rest and improved means for adjusting the head rest; and to provide other improvements as will appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hammock couch constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section of the same; and Fig. 3 a fragmentary bottom plan view of one end of the same.
Referring to the drawings, one embodiment of this invention comprises a body portion or main frame 1 which is preferably rectangular and oblong in shape and is preferably provided with a woven wire or coiled spring mattress 2 or other suitable covering stretched across the frame. A secondary frame 3 adapted to form a head rest is movably connected to each end of the main frame by hinges 1 or other suitable means. Hinges having pintles 5 adjacent the top surface of the main frame and their leaves 6 extending downwardly bet-ween the frames and bent at right angles over the under sides of the frames are preferred for this purpose. A suitable mattress 7 is stretched across each secondary frame.
For suspending the hammock, four chains, ropes, or other suitable means 10 are used. Each of these is adapted to be secured at one end to a ceiling or other fixed structure and Specification of Letters Patent.

around the adjacent end of the main frame 1 and is preferably longitudinally slidable through eyes 13 secured to the under side of the frame. This last mentioned chain may be connected to the hooks by passing a link of the chain over each hook, thus making the length of the chain between the hooks adjustably to raise or lower the adj acent end of the couch. These two hooks 11 are also connected by means of a chain 15 or other suitable flexible means, which passes under and is looped around the free end of the adjacent auxiliary frame 3 and preferably, is longitudinally slidable through eyes 16 secured to the under side of the frame. This latter chain is also preferably adjustaloly connected to its hooks 11 by having a link of the chain passed over each hook and the free end of the adjacent auxiliary frame 3 may be raised or lowered with respect to the main frame 1 by adjusting one end 17 of its supporting chain 15 over its hook 11 through any desired link, the chain sliding through the eyes 16 under the auxiliary frame to take up any slack in the chain.
The main frame 1 may be covered with a suitable upholstered mattress 20' and the auxiliary frames 3 may be covered with similar mattresses 21. The construction of the main frame and the auxiliary frames and the covering thereof may obviously be varied to suit various conditions.
In the'operation of this couch, the auxiliary frame at each end of the couch may be adjusted at any desired angle with the main frame to serve as a head rest, or one or both of the auxiliary frames may be adjusted at right angles to the main frame to form a side arm or side arms when it is desired to use the couch as a settee, or one or both of the auxiliary frames may be adjusted in the same plane with the main frame to extend the horizontal length of the couch.
Although only one form has been shown in which this invention may be embodied, it is obvious that many changes might be made in the construction set forth without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A hammock couch including an adjustable head rest and flexible means for supporting said head rest, and extending slidably beneath and from one side to the other thereof, said flexible means capable of adjusting said head rest by the adjustment of only one end thereof.
2. A hammock couch comprising a body portion, a head rest connected to said body portion and movable With respect thereto, means for suspending said couch, and looped means slidably connected to and beneath said body portion, and looped means slidably connected to and beneath said head rest for adjustably supporting said head rest, said body portion and head rest being adjustable by the actuation of but one end of said loop means.
3. A hammock couch including an adjustable head rest, flexible means extending slidably beneath said head rest and capable of lifting or lowering said head rest by actuation from one side thereof.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of August, 1909.
HERMAN L. HOHLFELD.
