Letters Patent No. 99,644, dated February 8, 1870.
Oor-
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.'
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and matting part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, CHARLES L. CooMBs, ofthe city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom pan yin g drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
My invention consists in a doll, having a gyroscope wheel concealed within it, so that when said Wheel is put in motion, the doll will balance itself in various positions when set upright.
The accompanying drawing represents a sectional view of my invention' A represents a strongr metal frame, of such shape as to be easily concealed by the skirt of the doll.
The said frame is enlargedat the points a and a', and drilled to receive the screws C and D, which formbearings for'a shaft, E.
The screw D forms the upper part of the legs of the doll, and the screw G, the lower part of the body of the doll. i
I prefer to make the body of the doll of Wood, or someother light material, and attach it to the head l of the screw C by means of a screw-bolt, H, but do not limit myself to this particular construction.
The shaft E is pointed at each end, to tit the conical sockets in the screws C and D, which form the bearings vof said shaft.
Upon the shaft E a wheel is secured, said wheel rbeing made of metal or other material of suitable Vweight and strength.
In the toe'of the doll, or in some other part of the foot of the doll, as the case may be, -a slot, lo, is cut, the purpose of which is hereinaiter described.
The head and arms of the doll may be attached tothe body in any convenient manner, and may be made of any material ordinarily used for such purposes.
The skirt of the doll-B falls to about the knees of the gure, and is attached to the waist in such mauner that it may be lifted from the frame A, when it is desired to put the wheel in motion.
The doll is made ready to balance, by putting the wheel in rapid motion, and this may be effected in any convenient manner; but I prefer to do so by means of-a cord Wrapped around the shaft E, as in the ordinary gyroscope.
While the wheel is in motion, if the figure be placed upon its feet, 4it will retain its upright position; and if it be placed upon a smooth surface, the doll will revolve upon its own feet slowly and gracefully. Or it may be placed upon a wire, by vmeans of the slot in its foot or foot-peg, and if the wire berslightly inclined, willmoveslowly down it, appearing to walk the wire. The doll may also be placed upon an upright stand or shaft, and will even balance upon the end of a persons finger.
Having thus fully described my invention, and the various modes of carrying it into effect,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat--Y ent, isi A doll oatop, constructed to balance in various positions, by means of a gyroscope wheel concealed Within it, substantially as herein described.
