HYPODERIVIIC SYRINGE.
Speciication of Letters Patent. Patented June 27,. 1911.V
Application led July 23, 1910. Serial No. 573,554.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, W BUGHANNAN PAR- soNs, citizen of the United States, residing at Missoula, in the county of Missoula and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hypodermic Syringes, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to syringes and has special reference to hypodermic syringes.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive syringe which may be readily taken apart and put to-gether, and which when not in use will have the nozzle or needle thereof inclosed within the main body of the syringe and thereby pro-- tect it.
The invention consists in a syringe as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of a syringe constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a view showing the bulb in longitudinal section and the needle inclosed within the bulb. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the needle in longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view in perspective of the end of the needle.
This invention applies to an ordinary bulb syringe with a nozzle as well as to a bulb syringe having a hypodermic needle. For the sake of illustrating the invention a hypodermic needle is shown in connection with the bulb.
In the construction of this invention a simple compressible bulb 1 is provided having a contracted neck with a thickened portion or collar 2.
8 indicates a hypodermic needle which is formed with an enlarged, elongated base portion 4 having two enlarged portions 4 with a narrow neck 5 between said portions 4. The base portion 4 is formed with a longitudinal passage way 6 which is considerably larger than the passage way of the needle so as to supply a quantity of the medicinal fluid in the bulb to the needle. While any suitable form of hypodermic needle may be employed, the needle here shown is preferably provided with an enlarged inclined curved head 7 serving as the point of the needle. It will be seen that by means of this construction the needle may be readily inserted in the neck of the bulb which has been pressed over a portion of the base 4, firmly clasping the neck 5 of the Vbase 4, forming a tight joint therewith and serving to hold the needle firmly in place in the neck of the bulb.
The syringe constructed as hereinbefore set forth may be readily used, the needle being detached from the bulb and the bulb filled with a suitable medicinal fluid or with water and a tablet mashed to powder contained in the water. The needle is then secured in the neck of the bulb as shown in Figs. l and 2 and the syringe is ready for use.
In order to protect the needle when not in use and to keep it in proper sanitary condition the needle is pushed into the bulb and the neck of the bulb brought over the neck 5 of the base of the needle thereby firmly holding the needle in place as it is located within the bulb as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be seen that by means of this invention a very simple, economical syringe is provided which is compact and which cannot get out of order, and in which the needle is properly protected when not in use.
Having described the invention I claim A hypodermic syringe comprising an elastic bulb having its mouth formed with a contracted neck and a hypodermic needle provided with an elongated base formed of a pair of ovate bodies alined in the direction of their lengths and connected together by a narrow neck adapted to lit closely within the neck of the bulb, each of said ovate bodies being adapted to be pushed through the neck of the bulb so as to have the latter closely grip the narrow neck between said ovate bodies whereby the needle may be held in position to project outward from the mouth of the bulb or into the bulb from its neck.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W BUCHANNAN PARSONS.
L. H. KEELER.
