Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Supports, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to means for supporting the flexible collars usually worn by ladies at the present time and which are also composed of very light, thin material and which when not supported will sag down around the neck and can only be retained in proper position by supports of some kind; and the object of the invention is to provide a collar support or supports of this class, the length of which may be adjusted so that they can be used in connection with collars of different heights or widths; a further object being to provide a collar support or supports of this class which may be easily connected with a collar when desired, and also easily detached therefrom when the collar is to be laundried; and with this and other objects in view, the invention consists in a collar support of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention that forms the basis of this application is an improvement on that described and claimed in a prior patent granted to me February 7, 1911, No. 983,260, and is fully disclosed in the following specifications, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a view indicating the use of a collar support of the class to which my invention relates ;Fig. 2 a side and edge view, respectively, of my improved collar support detached ;-F ig. 3 a View similar to Fig 2, but showing the parts of the collar support in a different position of adjustment;Fig. 4 a view similar to Figs, 2

In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing I have shown the method of using my improved collar support, and in said figure, the collar support a is secured to the inner side of a collar 1), and said collar support, as shown in Figs. 2 to 6 inclusive, consists of two separate parts 0 and d formed as shown in Figs. 5 and 6,.said parts con sisting of thin strips of predetermined length and composed of flexible material, preferably celluloid or other transparent or translucent material, or rubber, whalebone or other like material may be used if desired. In the construction shown, the strip 0 is provided in one end portion thereof with a longitudinal slot oropening 0 which extends from the central portion of said strip in the direction of one end thereof and which is approximately onethird the length of said strip and said strip is also provided with longitudinal rows of perforations 0 there being, in the form of construction shown, two of these rows of perforations arranged adjacent to the op posite side edges of the strip, but the exact arrangement of these rows of perforations, as shown, is not absolutely essential and said rows of perforations, or one of them, may be placed centrally of the strip if do sired.

The strip cl is provided in the opposite side edges thereof and in one end portion thereof and preferably adjacent to the transverse middle portion of said strip, with recesses d formingwa tongue (i having a head 0[ and, in the form of construction shown, the head (Z is slightly greater in length than one-third of the body portion (Z of said strip, and said strip cl is also provided with longitudinal rows or perforrations d which correspond with the perforations c in the strip 0.

In connecting the separate strips 0 and d to form the complete collar support a, the head d of the strip (Z is passed through the slot 0 of the strip 0 and the parts may then be adjusted as shown in Fig. 2 so that the total length of the support will be same as of either of the strips 0 and d; or by moving said strips longitudinally one on the other, the adjustment shown in Fig. 3 may be produced, inwhich the total length of the support will be approximately longer than the total length of the support when the separate parts thereof are adjusted as shown in Fig. 2; or by turning one of said strips on the other the said strips may be adjusted so as to extend the total length of the support as shown in Fig. 4, and by means of my improved construction and the method of adjustment shown and described, a single collar support may be used on collars of any desired width or vertical height.

It will be understood that when the separate parts of the strips 0 and (Z are connected by passing the head al of one through the slot 0 of the other, the said parts may be i turned one upon the other and adjusted into any desired position without disconnecting said parts, and the perforations 0 and at are so arranged that they may be made to register in any of the positions shown and the support, in practice, is secured to the inner side of the collar Z2 and transversely thereof by stitching through said perforations and whenever it is desired to launder the collar, the support or supports may be detached therefrom by cutting said stitching, and after the collar has been laundried,

the support or supports may be then connected therewith as will be readily understood.

My invention is not limited to the use of the slot or opening in one of the strips cd nor to the provision of a head on one of said strips only, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6; and in Figs. 7 to 10, inclusive, I have shown a modification in which two flexible strips 6 and f are employed, said strips being each of the same length and being provided, respectively, with longitudinal slots or openings e and f and one of said strips, the strip 6 in the form of construction shown, being provided at one end with a head 6 formed by notches or recesses e which also form a neck 6 and the strip f being provided at the opposite end thereof with a head f formed by. notches or recesses f, which also form a neck f and, in practice, these strips 6 and f are connected as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, by passing the head of one through the longitudinal slot in the other.

The 7 supports 6 and f, are also provided in the side portions thereof and in the ends and head portions thereof with perforations e and 7, respectively, and these perforations are spaced in such manner that in any desired position of the separate parts of the collar support, the said support may be secured to the collar and the separate parts of said support secured together by stitching through said perforations and through the collar and any desired number of said perforations may be employed as will be readily understood.

While practically the same result may be accomplished by both forms of construct1on herein shown and discussed, I prefer that shown in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, by reason of the fact that when the parts 6 and f are connected and locked together as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, they may be adjusted longitudinally in any desired position and the perforations therein will register and there will be no lateral movement of one of said parts upon the other, either before or after they are stitched together, or secured to the collar.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is

l. A collar support of the class described formed by notches or recesses in the side' edges thereof and which also form a narrow neck, said head being adapted to be passed through said slot or openin and the neck to turn therein, said strips being also provided with perforations arranged longitudinally thereof.

2. A collar support of the class described consisting of two thin flexible strips of predetermined length, both of said strips being provided with a longitudinal slot or opening, and said strips being also provided at the opposite ends thereof with a head formed by notches or recesses in the opposite side edges thereof and which also form a narrow neck, the heads of each strip being adapted to be passed through the slot presence of the subscribing Witnesses this or opening in the other strip and the neck 18th day of February 1911. thereof to move therein, and both of said strips being provided With perforations MARY ALLEN Which are arranged longitudinally thereof.
