PEDESTAL EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1911.
Application filed December 5, 1908. Serial No. 466,159.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALOMON KJALLGRE a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, and useful Improvements in Pedestal Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a pedestal table so that the sections thereof may move apart to form a better support for the table top and provided with means for uniting the sections of the pedestal and uniting the sections of the table top.
The principal object of this invention is to automatically lock the sections of the pedestal also the sections of the table top when the sections of the table top are brought together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved pedestal extension table. Fig. 2 is an underface representation, the pedestal being in transverse section. Fig. 3 is avertical section through the table top showing the locking mecha nism for the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the pedestal with the lock for the pedestal in its locked position. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 of the lock in its unlocked position. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the locking mechanism for the pedestal in its unlocked position. Fig. 7 is a vertical sect-ion through the housing 15. Fig. 8 is an underface representation of the pedestal. Fig. 9 is an isometrical representation of the bar 42.
The pedestal sectio-ns'l and 2 are supported upon feet. The sections are hollow and each has a platform 3 and 4 respectively connected to their upper ends, and to each platform is secured a cross-bar 5. The cross-bars 5 support the slides 6, and to these slides are secured the sections 7 and 8 of the table top.
hen the pedestal sections are locked togcther, the table top sections can be opened into the positions shown at Figs. 1, 2 and 4 to admit of the insertion of table leaves. After the pedestal sections are unlocked, the slides 6 can be extended which will admit of the pedestal sections being separated thereby further separating the sections of the table top and admittingmore leaves between the table top sections.
My improvements have to do with the have invented certain new means for connecting the pedestal sections and the table top sections.
To the upper face of the platform 3 of the pedestal section 1 is secured a base plate 9, and to this base plate is pivoted a releasing plate 10 at the point 11. This releasing plate has a slot 12 through which a stud 13 passes and connects it with the base plate. This releasing plate has an upturned edge 14 extending in the lengthwise direction of the plate.
A housing 15 is supported by the base plate and it contains a spiral spring 16. A lip 17 extendsfrom the releasing plate and bears against one end of the spring 16, the other end of the spring resting against one end of the housing. The action of this spring is to hold the releasing plate yieldingly at one end of its movement. The releasing plate near the slot 12 has an upturned portion 18.
To the upper face of the platform 4 of the pedestal section 2 is secured a plate 19 having upwardly extending ears 20 between which is pivoted one end of a bar 21. This bar 21 extends over the base plate 9 when the pedestal sections are closed, and to this overhanging end is pivoted a bell-crank to one arm 22 of which is pivoted a roller 23, and to the other arm 24 of this bell-crank is secured a handle 25. A stud 26 is supported by the arm 24 of the bell-crank and it contacts with the upper edge of the bar 21 when in the position shown at Fig. 4. A pin 27 extends from the arm 22 of the bell-crank and contacts with the under face of the bar 21 when the parts are in the position shown at Fig. 5, thereby preventing the handle 25 from falling down.
A plate 28 is secured to the upper face of the platform 4 and has an upturned end 29 through which a screw 30 passes, and lock nuts 31 turned on the screw serve to hold the screw against movement.
To the bar 21 is pivoted a bar 32 having its lower end 33 turned at right angles to the length of the bar, and provided with an opening through which a rod 34 passes, nuts 35 are placed in connection with the rod 34, one located each side of the lower end 33 of the bar 32. To the lower end of this rod 34 is secured a cross-bar 36 having its ends 37 and 38 upturned and diverging. To the underface of the bases of the pedestal sections 1 and 2 are secured slotted plates 39 and 40 respectively. The end 38 of the cross-bar 36 has a side projection 41 which contacts with the upper face of the plate 40 thereby preventing the end from becoming disengaged from the plate.
To the underface of the section 7 of the table top is secured a bar 42 having a depending end 43, the lower surface of which is formed with a notch 44. This depending end 43 is located in line with the upturned edge 14 of the releasing plate 9.
To the underface of the section 7 of the table top is secured a plate 45, and to this plate is pivoted a lever 46, and to this lever is adjustably connected an extension 47 by the slot 48 and bolts 49. The free end of this extension reaches to the edge 50 of the top section and is bent so that it can be reached by. simply moving the hand along the underface of the edge 50 of the top section. To the plate 45 is pivoted a catch, one end 51 of which is in hook form and its other end is pivoted to the lever 46. A stop 52 limits the movement of the lever 46 in one direction and a spring 53 acting upon the lever 46 serves to hold the lever yieldingly against the stop.
A pin 54 is connected with the underface of the section 8 of the table top.
When the parts are in the positions shown at Figs. 1 and 2 the pedestal sections are locked and the sections of the table top are opened as far as can be for the reception of table leaves. In order to separate the pedestal sections the handle 25 is raised into the position shown at Fig. 5 which will permit the bar 21 to fall carrying the bar 32, rod 34, and cross-bar 36 with it, so that the arm 37 of the cross-bar will be disengaged from the plate 39 of the pedestal section 1. By further separating the sections of the table top, the pedestal sections will be separated until limited by the slides 6. In reversing these movements, the sections of the table top are moved toward one another, the depending end 43 of the bar 42 will contact with the upturned edge 14 of the plate 9 and will remain in contact until the pedestal sections are brought together, which will occur before the sections of the table top are brought together, and at this point the parts will appear as shown at Figs. 5 and 6, that is, the upturned portion 18 will rest in contact with the screw 30. The further movement of the table top sections toward one another will cause the screw 30 to turn the plate on its pivot 11 until the end 43 can pass it. The
further movement of these top sections will cause the end 43 to contact with the bar 24 of the bell-crank and move it from the position shown in Fig. 5 into the position shown in Fig. 4. This movement of the bell-crank will cause the roller 23 to move in contact' with the upperface of the base-plate 9, raise the bar 21 into the position shown at Fig. 4,
and carry the cross-bar 36 with it. The arm 37 of the cross-bar 36 will enter the opening in the plate 39 and owing to the diverging position of the arms 39 and 40 the lower ends of the pedestal sections will be drawn together, and as the end 43 of the bar 42 rests on the arm 24 the cross-bar 36 will be held in this position.
When the top sections 7 and 8 are brought together, the hook end 51 will engage the pin 54 and the spring 53 will hold them in engagement thereby locking the top sections together. The locking action is automatic, and. the catch is disengaged by the operator moving the lever extension 47. If the top sections are opened, and the pedestal sections are unlocked, all that is necessary to lock the pedestal sections and lock the top sections is to close the top sections and the locking is entirely automatic. The unlocking of the pedestal sections is accomplished by the operator moving the handle 25.
The object in making the lever 46 with the extension 47 is to enable the parts to be used in connection with tables having different sized tops.
As shown at Fig. 4 while the end 43 of the bar 42 rests in contact with the free end of the bar 24 it will be observed that when the pin 26 rests on the bar 21 the pivotal point of the bell-crank in its connection with the bar 21 will be nearer the center of the roller 27 thereby forming a look within itself in order that the top sections may be separated without unlocking the pedestal sections.
By adjusting the screw 30, the time may be varied at which the end 43 will pass the upturned edge 14 in order that the pedestal sections may be nearly closed before they are locked.
I claim as my invention.
1. A pedestal extension table, comprising a divided pedestal, a top section supported by each pedestal section, a bar pivoted to one pedestal section, a cam lever pivoted to the bar and adapted to contact with the other pedestal. section to actuate the bar, and locking means for the pedestal section connected with and operated by the bar.
2. A pedestal extension table, comprising a divided pedestal, a top section supported by each pedestal section, a bar pivoted to one pedestal section, a cam lever pivoted to the bar and adapted to contact with and be moved by the other pedestal section to swing the bar, and locking means for the lower ends of the pedestal sections connected with and actuated by the bar.
3. A pedestal extension table, comprising a divided pedestal, a top section supported by each pedestal section, a bar pivoted to one pedestal section, a cam lever pivoted to the bar and adapted to contact with the other pedestal section and thereby move the bar, locking means for the pedestal sections connected with and operated by the bar, and means operated by one of the top sections in its closing movement to lock the locking means.
4:. A pedestal extension table, comprising a divided pedestal, a divided top capable of an opening movement without separating the pedestal sections, means for locking the pedestal sections, means for holding the locking means of the pedestal sections in unlocked position until the pedestal sections are in position to be locked by said locking means, and means actuated by the top on its movement after the pedestal sections are together for moving the loclring means to locked position.
5. In an extension table, the combination with separable supporting sections and separable top sections carried thereby, of a locking device having a permanent slidable engagement with one supporting section and a detachable sliding engagement with the other supporting section to secure the sections together, said engagements being angularly disposed to each other to draw the sections together, and means connected to the locking device between the engaging portions to operate the same.
6. In an extension table, the combination with separable supporting sections and separable top sections carried thereby, of a movable locking device having offset divergent ends that respectively and slidably engage the supporting sections to draw and secure said sections together, one of the ends detachably engaging one of the supporting sections, and means connected to the locking device between its ends to operate the same.
7. In an extension table, the combination with separable supporting sect-ions and separable top sections carried thereby, OTE slotted plates secured to the supporting sections and a locking device having divergent ends that respectively engage in the slots of the plate to draw the supporting sections together, one of said ends being longer than the other and being permanently engaged with one plate, the shorter end detachably engaging the other plate.
8. In an extension table, the combination with separable table members, comprising separable supporting sections and separable top sections respectively carried thereby, of means for locking the supporting sections together, and means for operating the locking means including a bar movably mounted on one. of the table members and connected to the locking means, and a cam device pivoted on the bar and having a movable bearing.
9. In an extension table, the combination with separable table members, comprising separable supporting sections and separable top sections respectively carried thereby, of means for locking the supporting sections together, and means for operating the locking means including a bar movably mounted on one of the table members and connected to the locking means, and a cam device pivoted on the bar and having a movable bearing on the other table member.
10. In an extension table, the combination with separable table members, comprising separable supporting sections and separable top sections respectively carried thereby, of means for locking the supporting sections together, and means for operating the locking means including a bar movably mounted on one of the table members and connected to the locking means, a cam device pivoted on the bar and having a movable bearing on the other table member, and means carried by the said other table member to operate the cam device.
11. In an extension table, the combination with separable supporting sections and separable top sections respectively carried thereby, of means for locking the supporting sections together, a movable bar connected to the locking means and mounted on one of the supporting sections, a cam operating device pivoted to the bar and having a movable bearing on the other supporting section, and means carried by one of the top sections and engaging the cam device to actuate the same.
12. In an extension table, the combination with separable supporting sections, of separable top sections respectively and movably mounted thereon, means for locking together the supporting sections, an actuating element carried by one of the top sections, a device for moving one of the supporting sections, and a device for operating the locking means, said devices being disposed in the path of movement of the actuating element and operated thereby.
13. In an extension table, the combination with separable supporting sections, of separable top sections respectively and movably mounted thereon, means for looking together the supporting sections, an actuating element carried by one of the top sections, a device for moving one of the supporting sections, said device being disposed in the path of movement of and operated by the element, automatic means for moving said device out of the path of said actuating element, and a device for operating the locking means, said latter device being also disposed in the path of movement of and being actuated by said element.
14. In an extension table, the combination with separable supporting sections, of separable top sections slidably mounted thereon, means for locking together the supporting sections, an actuating elementcarried by one of the top sections, a device for moving one of the supporting sections, movably mountedon said section and disposed in the path of movement of the actuating element, means mounted on the other supporting section for automatically moving said device out of the path of movement of the element, and actuating means for the locking means mounted on one of the supporting sections and disposed in the path of movement of the actuating element.
15. In an extension table, the combination with separable pedestal sections, of a lock for securing the same together, separable top sections movably mounted on the pedestal sections, a swinging bar pivoted on one pedestal section and connected to the look,
a cam device pivoted on the bar and having a movable engagement with the other pedestal section, a swinging plate pivoted on said latter pedestal section, a bar secured to the s top section and having a downturned end tion disposed in the path of movement of and being operated by the downturned end of the bar.
