WILLIAM? T. CONWAY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DEVICE FOR STAMPING on MARKING MEATS,
Specification of Letters-'ratent. Patented June 20, 1911.
Application filed January 7 1911. Serial He. Games.
(nnnica'rnn To THE PUBLIC.)
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM T. CONWAY, an employee of they Department of Agriculture of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, (whose 'post-ofiice address is Local Office, Bureau of Animal Industry, St.
Louis, Missouri,) have invented a new and useful Device for Stamping or Marking Meats. I
This application is made under the act of March 3,1883, chapter 143, (22 Stat, 625), and the' invention herein described and claimed maybe used by the Government of the United States or any of its ofiicers or. "employees in the prosecution of work for the Government or by any .person in the United States without the payment of any royalty thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a .cheap, inexpensive and durable device that may be conveniently and effectively used for stamping or marking meats.
It is necessary that meats which are shipped in interstate commerce shall bear certain marks indicating that such meats have been inspected and passed under Federal supervision. The marks on the'meats should disclose the number of the establishment where the shipment originated and the work of stamping or marking such meat is performed at the establishment by Federal employees. My device is particularly desi ed for use in this work, as the same can e made in such a way thatany inspection legend maybe impressed on meat. The device is also designed with a view of saving ink, as it only requires a small quantityof ink in its operation and its construction is them from falling out.
so arranged that a clear and distinct mark is easily made, thus avoiding any blurring and illegibility.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention may be more readily understood from the following description,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, form ng a part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a face view of my invention; Fig. 2 is ya] side elevation showing plates spaced; and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view s owing pins' with heads for preventing Referrin to the drawings, A represents a tplate or disk having a series of holes, B
drilled therein.. The perforations or holes B are sufliciently large to admit the passage of pins, D, provided-with heads in order to prevent said pins from falling from the disk,
A. These h'oles, B, are drilled or,,'cut through the disk, A, in such a manner as to represent the figures and letters that constitute the legend or inscription which it is desired the stamp shall indicate when used in making impressions. E is also a plate or disk of the same size as the disk, A, and designed for use as a cover for the heads of the pins,
I. D,- when the same have ben inserted in the holes, 13.. The purpose of this disk, E, is to retain the pins in a fixed position when my device is ready for operation.
F indicates the handle of the marker, having a screw, B, with' its head partfirmly I embedded in the bottom end of said handle permit-the screw, G, to pass through it and engage the threaded openin I.
In order to make the d1sk,. A, and the plate, E, hold the pins, D, more rigidly in place after the parts hereinbefore mentioned are adjusted, I provide threethreaded openings, K, in said disk and three openings in said plate, suitably spaced and arran ed for engaging screws, L, which, when tig tened securely, retains the disk, plate and pins in a fixed position. .I do not confine myself to the use of three screws as described, but one or more screws may be employed for said disks, the number being regulated by the size and weight of the platesv and pins.
. In practlcing my invention I place the pins, D, in the holes, B, which have been out or drilled in the disk, A. Then I cover the heads of the. pins, D,with the plate, E,
which said plate, E, retains the pins in a rigid position 'by means of the screw, G,
passing through the opening, J, into the threaded -opening, I, and engaging the threaded parts ofsaid opening until tightened. In order to more securely hold the pins in a fixed position, I also adjust the screws, L, in the openings, K, of the plate,E, and disk, A. When the parts described are so adjusted, the device is ready for use and the operator is only required to put the device in contact with a pad saturated with ink, thereby causing the points of the pins,
forming the legend to become coated with ink, and then apply the marker to meat or other objectwhich it is desired to stamp The disk, A, plate, E, pins, D, and the screws, G and L, may be made of brass,
steel or other suitable material, but brass is preferable. for the construction of said parts, as I consider this material Will give better service for the purposes for which my device is adapted.
I .do not confine the use of my .invention exclusively to the marking or stamping of meats, but the same may be used for making impressions on any article or substance on which an inscription or impression may be made by my invention.
-Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A stamp or marker consisting of a handle having a screw securely embedded in its bottom and projectingtherefrom, a disk having a threaded hole in its center. and
'bearin an inscription by means of a series of dril ed holes, pins having heads for enter' ing said holes, a cover for said pins having an, opening in its center, said screw passing through the opening In said cover and en-.
gaging the threaded opening of said disk,
thereby rigidly adjusting said parts for use as a stamp, substantially as specified.
2. A stamp or marker consisting of a handle, a disk with acentral threaded opening for the reception of a screw and havinghaving a central threaded openlng and a series of threaded openings arranged with respect to said central threaded opening, an inscription formed in said disk by means of a plurality of drilled holes, pins provided with heads for enterin said holes ,and representing said inscription, a'cover forfsaid pinshaving a central opening and a series of openings arranged with respect to said central opening, a plurality of screws for passing through said series of openings in said cover and-engaging the plurality'of threaded openings in said disk, a handle, a-
screw partially embedded in the bottom of said handle and adapted to pass through the central opening in said cover and engage the central threaded opening in said disk and holding said parts in a rigid workable position, in combination with the adjust ment of the said mentioned series of screws, for use as a stamp, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof,I aflix my signature in the presence of two subscribed witnesses.
WILLIAM T. CONWAY.
