Description

W. N. HUNTER.
BAG.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 11. 1908.
Patented June 20, 1911y vTo all whom it may concern:
,tran scarse earner or WARREN N. HUNTER, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNION' SPECLAJI.' MACHINE COMPANY. 0F CHICAGOL ILLINOIS, A.
CORPORATION' OF ILLINOTS.
BAG.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Jane ee, reir.
Application filed August 11, 1908. Serial No.' 447,927.
Beit known that I, IVARREN N. HUNTER, `a citizen of the United States, Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of lreference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an' improvement in bags, and particularly to a device forenabling the closing seam of the bag to be readily severed, the bag opened and the contents removed, without in the breaking of the seam endangering the structure of the bag itself.
Manufacturers of cement make a practice of selling the same in-bags which lare filled and closed at the top by seeming. These bags are made of tough and strong material,
and are of such cost that it is desirable they i should be used over and over again.
Through the carelessness of workmen in opening these bags by using shovels or other tools for severing the closing seam, a considerable percentage of loss of bags is occasioned the cement manufacturers, by very materially limiting the number of times a' bag may) be used.l
It is the object, therefore, of my invention to provide a simple and effective attachment tothe bag for severmg the seam, which Wlll be within easy reach of a workman, and be y much easier to manipulate than a tool.
The invention, therefore, consists primarily of\v a bag having a closing seam readily ravelable, when severed, and means attached to the bag, adapted when manipulated to sever the closing seam.
Secondly, consists of a .bag having a closing seam readily ravel a ble when severed, and a device attached to the bag and engaged by the stitches of the closing seam whereby when strain is put on said device,
the seam may be broken.
Finally, the invention consists in the va` rions matters hereinafter described. and re ferred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illu `trated in the accompanying drawings, in which,- c
Figure l is a side view of a bag con structed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view, partly in perspective, showing the bag after the seam has been severed and partly unraveled. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the bag.
In these drawings, A represents the bzw, which maybe of any suitable material. After it is filled, it is closed by a seam c, formed as herein shown, of a line of single chain stitching, which from its nature is easily ravelable when broken. Secured on the outside of the bag near one endof the seam, and by certain of the stitches of the seam, is a strip of material b. of which the bag is composed, or of some other material, the only essential being that it be stronger than the seam, and capable of breaking or severing vthe same, when strain is applied.
While the construction illustrates a practical embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that 'I do not desire to limit my self tothe eXactdetails of construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l l. A' bag having closing means for the mouth thereof'and a separate strip arranged v exteriorly of the bag and secured thereto by said mouth-closing means, whereby the re-v moval of `the strip will break the lclosing means.,
2. A bag having a closing seam readily ravelable when severed, a strip of n'iaterial attached to the bag by some of the stitches of the closing seam, and adapted when strain is pnt upon it to break the seam. Y
In testimony whereof I-aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.'l
