CLEMENT IBAJ, LYON, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR T0 COMPAGNIE `FRANCAISE DES APPLICATIONS DE LA CELLULOSE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
MACHINE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF ARTIFICIAL TISSUS.
`To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Beit known that I, CLEMENT BAJ, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Lyon, in France, have invented certain new useful Improvements inMachines for the Manufacture of Artificial Tissues, of which the following is a specification.
- The improvements forming` the object of the present invention are applicable to the manufact-ure of articial tissues by coating an engraved cylinder with a substance such as oollodion capable of filling the depressions of the design and of being hardened by its passage through a'suitable liquid.
The said improvements consist in constructive devices and combinations of parts adapted to assure the economic operation of the cleaning and finishing devices for the Vengraved cylinder and to facilitate their inspection and dismounting.
An embodiment of the improvements apknown kind are represented in the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 is a transverse section through part of the machineFig. 2 is a sectional elevation illustrating the mechanism for coating the engraved roller, Fig. 3 is a sectional elevationillustrating the distributer for the cleaning water and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation illustrating a suction device for removing said water.
The engraved cylinder 1 rotates in a bath 2 containing the `hardening li uid, this bath e residue re- The substance: to be molded is 'contained in the trough' 3 bearing against the cylinder La; Short lliardeni-n distance above thelevel of the liquid. `The outer side of the trough 3 1s formed by a scraper 4 shown in *detailv in Fig. 2 and adapted to rock on a shaft 5 said scraper bein pressed against counterweighted the trough 3' are position by vclamps 7 in such' a 4inanneras to be set at a distance apart suitable to the' length iof the engraving on-the'cylinder. The shaft 5 1s supported at its ends by bearings 8 (Fig. 2) the height of which can be adjusted to insure the contact of the s'cra er along its entire length;`
further the sha't 5 can slide longitudinally l Specification of Letters Patent. Application led February 24, 1911.

in the bearings 8, to which end it receives a to and fro movement for the purpose of thoroughly distributing the substance into the engraved parts of the roller. This movement 1s produced by a horizontal rod.10 given a reciprocating movement and passing into a groove in a cap 9 secured to the shaft 5 by a set screw, this method of connectlon leaving the scraper 4 perfectly guidedln its bearings and free to be acted on by the counterweighted arms. The rod 10 1s fixed to a lever 1'1 which is giveny an oscillatory movement by an eccentric'or the The opposite sides of the trough 3` a're adjustable both as to height and so as to be capable of'exact regulation between the scraper 4 and cylinder 1. For said sides are fixed to the clamp 7 by a bolt 37 passing through two slots and form a joint with the surface of the cylinder by a packing piece 36.
As the cylinder 1 rotates in the direction of the arrow (Fig. l) the engraved parts thereof become filled with the substance in the trough 3 which traverses the hardening liquid in the bath 2 as far as the point 12 where the tissue is detached after which the cylinder is cleaned by water or other suitable liquid. This liquid is distributed by means of a horizontal tube 13 provided along an axial line with a row of apertures 15 leading into a jacket 16 having at its lower part a narrow slot 17 between itself and a depending member 18 which supports a flexible band 14 which bears on the cylinder. The tube 13 shown in detail in Fig. 3 partly in section and partly in elevation, 1s supported at` eac end `by a double sliding suspension member19 by which'its vertical and horizontal position can be'regulated eX- actly; it receives the liquid centrally in a regular manner 'by means of a iexible tube 20;:this liquid flowing along the tube without filling :it and passing through thea 1 ertures 15 lnto thejacket 16 whence 1t `ows throu h the slit 17 in a thinand even stream onto t e-surface of the-cylinder where it is held back by the tiexible band 14e.` p A.
The eective length of the tube 13 can be adjusted according to the width of the engraved part of the roller by means of two tightly packed pistons 21 arranged in the tube and adjusted from the outside bythe rods 22. The apertures 15 can be mspected and cleaned if necessary by removing the jacket 16 which, for this purpose, 1s mounted on hinges.
After having removed the substances adhering to the cylinder the washing liquid is sucked up by lips 24: and 25 of a suction device 26 and the cylinder being cleaned can then receive another coating from the trough 3.
The suction device shown partly in elevation and partly in section in Fig. 4.- comprises a horizontal tube 26 connected by two elbows 28 with two vertical tubes 27 fixed to the machine frame and in communication with a pump which maintains a constant vacuum in the whole device. The horizontal part of the tube is provided with the lips 24, 25 forming two continuous longitudinal slits which can be caused to approach very close to the surface of the cylinder without touching it. It is important that this suction device when once in position should be capable of being rapidly mounted and dismounted and also of replacement exactly in position. For this purpose the horizontal part 26 which is integral with the two elbows 28 is connected to the vertical tubes by liquid tight joints formed by couplings 29, said couplings being tightened by means of clamps 30 pivoted at 31 to the tubes 27 and provided with pressure screws 32 bearing on projections 33 at the upper parts of the elbows. It will be seen that by simply unscrewing the screws 32 the suction device can be removed. The supports 34 of the liquid distributer or washing device may be mounted in said projections 33 so that said distributer can be removed with the suction device and the whole replaced without disarrangement of the arts. Similarly to the liquid distributer the effective length of the suction devicecan be limited according to the width of the engraving, for which purpose two grooves are provided between the lips 24, 25 into which small laths 35 can be slid from each side so as to limit the length of the suction aperture.
