MAX ERICI-I BLUME, OF LEIIPZIG, GERMANY.
DIE.
Original application filed April 13, 1908, Serial No. 426,896.
Serial No. 468,870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX Enron BLUME, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Leipzig, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dies more particularly for use in stamping letters or other characters into printing metal and the present application is a divisional one on my previous application Serial No. 426896, filed 13th April 1908.
The object of the invention is to provide a die so formed that the characters impressed into the metal thereby have no deleterious effect on the metal surrounding such characters so that when impressing a character no lateral swelling or bulging of the metal takes place.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the annexed drawings in whieh- Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal sect-ion of the die and Fig. 2 a partial cross-section at right angles thereto, Fig. 3 shows the position of the die immediately before the impression, and Fig. 4 immediately after such impression and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the die from below.
In impressing or embossing type metal by means of dies, the characters are embossed closely together so that care must be taken that during the impression the metal does not swell out laterally below the die as otherwise the previous type or character would be destroyed or the base of the already impressed adjacent type would be raised and subsequently on printing take up color and print also. In order to avoid Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1911. Divided and this application filed December this objection the die 7 is provided with a sharp edge 27 which projects beyond the plane of the face of the die in which is cut the character 28 and surrounds same at all points. The said edge is outwardly inclined and on impression first penetrates into the metal 9 and compresses the same inward owing to the inclination of said edge. In this way the metal is prevented from escaping or spreading below the die and must completely fill the spaces thereof.
The inner sides of the edge 27 form the lower portion of a concave or cavity, in the center and bottom of which is formed the matrix of the letter to be cut and shaped by the die.
Exterior-1y, the die is tapered or narrowed in diameter from the base upward, which form. is very essential to the end that the metal adjacent to the cut made by the die shall not be upset, swelled, or bulged in the stamping operation.
hat I claim is The improved stamping die for the purpose specified, comprising a body having a base provided with a concavity and a sharp cutting edge surrounding the same, the central portion of the concave having a matrix adapted for forming a letter in relief, and the die being tapered exteriorly from the bottom upward, as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
