JAMES ERNEST TATI-IAM, OF BALIVIAIN, NEAR SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, ASSIGNOR TO I-IIMSELF, AND FRANCIS JOHN MCDONALD, OF
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.
NEEDLE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 13, 1911.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES ERNEST TAT- HAM, a subject of the King o-f Great Britain, residing at VVinifred Villa, Duke street, Balmain, near Sydney, in the State o f New South Wales and Commonwealth of Australia, A. M. I. Mech. E., gas-engineer, have invented a new and useful Improved Needle Holder, of which the following is a specication.
This invention refers to an improved con trivance whereby the danger of losing sewing needles is minimized and whereby such needles will be found handy to the thread during and after intermittent cessation of the actual sewing.
This improved contrivance for holding needles to reels of sewing thread consists of a magnetically-charged disk or film of metal removably affixed to the end of the reel or spool of thread so that its capability of magnetically holding a needle will keep said needle attached to the reel or spool.
The magnetically charged disk or film of metal according to this invention consists of a thin steel disk which is cut radially so as to provide north and south magnetic poles on or in other words to convert said disk into a horseshoe magnet and this disk has side clips to take diametrically oppositely on the edge of one end of the reel or spool and has a central depression to take in the hollow core to hold said disk or film against all but forceful removal. Or instead of said central depression surface nicks or other devices might bei substituted for said central depression.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of magnetic disk; Fig. 2 is a part sectional view showing the disk applied to a spool; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the disk applied to a spool; Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of different forms of disk, and Fig. 6 is a part sectional view showing the disk of Fig. 5 applied to a spool.
The disk 7 shown in Fig. l has a slot- 8 tongue 9 with central depressed. piece 10 and diametrically opposite clips 11 all stamped from the one piece of steel and Figs. 2 and 3 show the same in use.
Fig. 4 illustrates a modification of the magnetic disk wherein the tongue 9 is dispensed with and nicks '12 substituted for the same purpose and the clips 11 if necessary closed in after placement.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a further modification of the magnetic disk or film having a tongue 9 formed by a piece Stamped from the disk 7 leaving a slot 8 and Fig. 6 is a view of the same in use.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and the manner in which the same is to be performed I declare that what I claim is;
A magnetized disk provided with slits eX- tending inwardly from the circumference thereof and forming a tongue, said tongue being bent at an angle to the'plane of the disk, whereby it is adapted to extend within the hole formed in a spool to detachably hold the disk in position thereon.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ERNEST TATHAM.
