To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH E. Lorna, of Port Jefferson, in the county of Suffolk and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mufflers, (Case B,) and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to an improvement in mufflers designed to muflle the sound of the exhaust of engines, and especially the exhaust from automobil engines. I
The object of my inventlon s to more perfectly destroy the sound which usually results from an engine exhaust, and to s1mplify the construction in such a manner that the expense thereof will be reduced to a minimum.
I have shown one embodiment of my 1nvention in the accompanying drawlngs, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a mufller made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the sections contained within the muflier; Flg. 3 is a cross-section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a cross-section taken 0n line 4:-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a similar vlew to Fig. 2, but showing a slightly modified form of section; and Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the same taken on line 66 of Fig. 5
In the accompanying drawings, 1 1s a pipe of an engine exhaust, which is screwthreaded to one end of a cylindrical casing 2, the other end of said casing being provided with a cap 3 having a circular opening 1. Within the casing 2 there is provided a series of telescoping sections 5, each of which comprises a cylindrical portion 6 and a flat bottom 7. The free edge of the cylindrical portion 6 is provided with an off-set flange 8- for receiving the bottom of the adjacent section. The central portion of the bottom 7 is cut away to produce a segmental opening 9, at one side of which there is an upset projection 10, comprising two parallel side faces 11 and an inclined front face 12.
The modified form, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, is constructed in exactly the same manner, except that the central opening 9 is provided at one side thereof, and opposite the upset projection 10, with a depending inclined flange 13.
In the operation of the device, as the gas escapes from the exhaust pipe 1 into the Specification of Letters Patent.

casing 2 and through the openings 9 in the sections 5, a portion of the current of gases is deflected by the projection 10 in each of the sections, so that as a result a circular current of high velocity is produced in each of the sections 5. The circular currents thus produced gradually lose their speed, owing to the friction thereof upon the wall of the sections, so that when under the reduced speed of rotation the centrifugal force becomes less than th expansive force of the gases, portions of the currents gradually escape between faces 11 underneath the inclining face 12 into the succeeding sect-ions. The effect of the sections 5 is thus to cause the current of exhaust gases entering from the exhaust pipe 1 with a variable speed, which variable speed is the active cause of the noise produced by a non-muffied exhaust, to be discharged. from the end of the casing 2 through the opening 4, as a current of gases having very nearly a constant speed. In the case of the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, this result is accentuated by the presence of the flange 13, which deflects the gases escaping through the central opening 9 in any one section 5 toward the upset projection 10 carried by the succeeding sec tion 5. The presence of these flanges 13 effectively prevents any portion of the current from going through the muffler unmodified. In this modified form a portion of the current of gases coming from th exhaust pipe 1 will be directly deflected by being caused to impinge upon the inclined planes 12, while the remaining portions of the current between any two adjacent sections will be caused to follow an inclined path directed toward the projection 10 of the next succeeding section. Under these circumstances, it is impossible for any portion of the current to pass directly from the exhaust pipe 1 out through the end of the casing 2 without being interrupted.
While I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim 1. In a device of thecharacter described, an exhaust pipe having an outlet opening, a shell adapted to receive a current of gases, and means for causing the gases to rotate therein on th axis of said current, com prising an inclined surface located directly in front of said opening.
2. In a device of the character described, an exhaust pipe having an outlet opening, a shell adapted to receive a current of gases, and means for causing the gases to rotate therein on the axis of said current, comprising an inclined surface diagonal to said axis and located directly in front of said opening.
In a device of the character described, an exhaust pipe having an outlet opening, a shell adapted to receive a. current of gases, means for causing the gases to rotate therein on the axis of said current, comprising an inclined surface located directly in front of said opening, and a deflector for deflecting th current toward said inclined surface.

In a device of the character described, an exhaust pipe having an outlet opening, a shell adapted to receive a current of gases, means for musing the gases to rotate therein on the axis of said current, comprising an inclined surface diagonal to said axis and located directly in front of said opening, and a deflector for deflecting the current toward said inclined surface.
5. In a device of the character described,
a. casing, and a plurality of sections therein, each of which is provided with a bottom having a segmental opening.
6. In a device of the character described, a casing, and a plurality of sections therein, each of which is provided with a bottom having a segmental opening, and a projection at one side of the opening.
7. In a device of the character described, a casing, and a plurality of sections therein, each of which is provided with a bottom having a segmental opening, and an inclined projection at one side of the opening.
8. In a device of the character described, casing, and a plurality of sections therein, each of which is provided with a bottom having a segmental opening, and an inclined projection at one side of the opening and a depending flange at the other side of said opening In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
