v the following is a My invention relates to improvements in CARL SAVELSIBERG, OF AAGHEN, GERMANY.
MEANS FOR CLOSING PIT-MOUTHS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1911.
Application filed. April 24, 1911. Serial No. 623,034.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL SAVELSBERG, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Aachen, in the Province of the Rhine, Kingdom of Prussia, German. Empire, have invented certain new and useful Means for Closing Pit-Mouths, of which specification.
means for closing pit-mouths, and particularly in means for closing the mouths of pits which are provided in streets and places for enabling persons to enter the canals containing electrical and other conduits or devices connected therewith.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through the it with the new means for closing its mouth; Fig. 2 is a vertical section at a right angle thereto; Fig. 3 is a plan-view; Fig. at is an elevation, partially in section, showing the different ports in the position for enabling persons to enter the pit and the adjacent cana'l.
a is the pit, and b the canal or room to be entered by the persons controlling the conduits or devices contained therein.
0 is the cover of the pit. This cover a forms the top of the box 03 surrounding the ladder f rigidly attached to the bottom of the pit a. The said box is suspended on chains 9 which runover the disks h secured to the shafts 2'. The latter can be rotated by the horizontal shaft 70 and the latter by the vertical shaft to which has four-cornered end adapted to engage with a key or handle. The box d has a hinged door 0.
By rotating the shaft m the box (I is raised so that it appears above the surface of the street. The door 0 can, then, be opened and persons can step down the ladder f for entering the room I). The door 0 can be closed while the persons are doing their work in the said room.
What I claim is:
Means for closing pit-mouths, consisting in a box the top of which is formed by the cover of the pit, and which is provided with a door, and in means for raising and lowering the said box, as set forth.
In testimony, whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL SAVELSBERG.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM J. KEUTERs, ELIsn KALBUsoH.
