FENCE-POST.
.-ipp1ication filed February 11, 1910. Serial Ho. 543,239.
To cit whom it may concern:
it known that I, LEONARD lVsAvnn, a -nituralbcrn citizen of the United States of America, residing at BiXbjl, in the county of Perkins and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to fence posts and embraces the construction ot a fence post. 'provn d the invention comprises certain combina tions, constructions, and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings,'in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the post in use, Fig. 2 is a detail view on an enlarged scale showing the wire clam ing section opened for-the insertion of ence wires, Fig. 3 is a detail view of the joint for the wire clamping section, Fig. a is a plan view of a blank for a modified post section, Fig. 5 is a view in elevation showing the wire clamping section opened outwardly of the post. section, Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view, Fig. 7 is a detail vertical sectional view, and Fig. 8 is a detail perspec tive view or" the top of the post.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention 1 denotes the post section, which is provided on its lower end with a base 2. The post section 1 is formed eitherU-shaped or ll-shaped and is pro vided with notches or recesses 3, adapted to receive the wires 4t. The recesses or notches 3 are spaced apart from each other according to the number of wires intended to be used. The post section 1 is formed with a longitudinal cut-away portion adapted to receive the wire clamping section 4, which is hinged at 5 to said post section.
The wire clamping section i is formed with the same outline and general design as the post section 1, and is intended to form a part of said section so as to make a complete post. The wire clamping section a is hinged to the post section 1 by means or a hinge which comprises a leaf member 5 secured to the wire clam in" section t on P s its lower end, and 21dapted to pivotally engage with the ring hinge member which is secured to the post section 1. T he section t is adapted to engage the post section 1 so t let the edges thereof will enter between the edges of the said section 1 and contact with the wires a. A ring 6 is pivoted to the member 6 on the top of the section 1 so as to swing on the clamping section a and hold the edges thereof against the wires 4'.
In usin the improved post the }')0Slsection 1'. is first positioned on the ground and the base 2 is driven thereinto, with the hinge joint 5 held above the ground. -Wires are then placed in proper relation in the recesses or notches 3 and the wire clamping section is closed against the post sec tion so as to hold the wires in the recesses or notches. The ring 6 is then placed over the top of the wire clamping section 4 and forced into position thereon. The wire clamping section 4 can be loosely connected .to the post section 1 when it is desired to .tion, thereby holdingthe Wires in their tightened condition.
in Fig. 5 is illustrated a modification of the postbase 2 and the post section 1 is shown, comprising a member ,or post section 7, which is provided with abase 8 formed out of a single piece or blank 9 of metal, as shown in Fig, 6. The lower part of the blank or piece 9 is Wider than the upper part thereof and is provided with a point, whereby the entering end of the base can be formed by rolling the blank or piece over asuitable forming tool, thereby bringing the side edges of the blank into engagement with each other and forming a closed lower end for the post section 7, which is adapted to enter .the ground and firmly support the fence wires in the manner of a post made out of solid instead of blank material. The blank 9 is first stamped out of suitable sheet material, with the upper end thereof cutaway to receive the wire clamping section, and the formed blank is then shaped into a cylindrical shape ready for attachment to the Wire clamping section. The upper end of the post section is formed with openings adapted'to receive the ends of the bail member or attachment 10, which is thereby pivotally held on the post section 7 so as to engage with the upper end of the wire clamplapse.
Having described my-invention I claim 1. A fence post constructed of a blank, the upper portion of said blank being reduced, the lower portion or" said blank being beveled on both sides of its lower Xtrernity;
notches formed on the two edges of the said reduced portion, said blank being curved so that the edges of the lower poi tion thereof Contact and form a pointed base. i
2, A. fence post constructed oi a blanlc, the upper portion of said blank being duced, the lower portion of said blank ing beveled on both sides or its-lower extremity; notches being i d edges of the said-reduced l. on, said being curved so that the edges of the lm portion thereof contact-and form a poii. r base, said rednced portion vertical half of said post, and a member hinged to said base adapted to form another vertical half of said post.
on the two.

3. A fence post constructed of a blank,
the upper portion of blank beingreduced, the lower portion of said blank besenses base, said reduced portion forming a vert-ical half of said post, and a member hinged to said base adapted to form another vertical half of said post, and means for locking the upper ends of the half sections of said post.
4. A post consisting of a blank, having an enlarged lower portion, said hlankcurved so that the lower ends of said enlarged por-' tion contact to form a base to said post, the lower portion of said blank being beveled so as form a point for said base, notches UYPBI edges of said blank and means IQZFJT'EF wires Within said notches.
