Description

IMPROVED CLAMP FOR FORMING- HORSIESIEZOE-CALKS;l
Te Schedle referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the same To all 'whom it may'concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH RHoADs, of Niles, in the county of Berl-ien, and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements. in Clamps for Use in x Forming Cnlks ou Horseshoes, of which the following isn specification, reference being had to the accompa'- nying drawings.
My invention consists in a, clamp or swnge, to be applied to nn anvil, for holding horseshoe's while having the calks formed on them.
In the drawing- Figure l is a. top plan view of my clamp, with :i shoe in position therein, and
Figure 2 is a. longitudinal vertical section c'f the same, on the line :v-x of lig. l.
In constructing my clamp, I iirst provide e, solid metal block, Aprovided, on its' under side, with a stud, a, tu be inserted in ar hole in the anvil, to hold the device in posi'tion, and having one of its upper edges, b, bevelled or chmni'ered off, as shown in both figures.
Int-o the opposite end of the block A from that having the bevel, I screw u strong met-sil eye-bolt, B, and through this eye-bolt pass one end of a stirrup or link, C. This stirrup is of n shape corresponding tothat of the block A,'.and of a. size to permit of its being shut down over and around the block, and lezwe a. space between it and .the front end of the block equal to the thickness of the'horseshoe.
` In using my. device, the stirrup is raised, as shownv in dotted lines, and the shoe placed against its front end, with the ends proj ectingabove the fece ofthe block.
The stirrnp is then driven down over the shoe, as shown in figs. l and2, thus lockingthe shoe rigidly tothe block The ends of the shoe are tlienbent over, as shown in iig. 2, and hammered down on the bevelledlce 'b until the requisite edge is obtained, as shown in dotted lines in thesame figure. The stirrup isv thenV driven up, and the shoe released.
'lhe shoe is then turned over, and the toe-cnlk, which has been previously weldedon, treated ima. similar manner.
Aoperate substantially as described.
2. The combination of the die or block A, the stirrup or clamp C, and the adjustable eye-bolt B, all ccnstructed and zirrangedes set forth.
` JEREMIAH RHOADS.
