Description

@titled d glatte oratie-JENSEN. or cHRi'srIANIjA', NORWAY.
Letters Patent-N .'99,44 .5, dated February 1, 1870; antedated January 24, 1870,.
[IMPRovEMEN-r IN Rocxnvcnam.
The Schedule referred to in. these Letters Patent and making parl'- 0f the same.
To all fil/hom tinfamy concern 4 i Beit known that I, OLAS JENSEN, of Ohristiania, Norway, have invented celtain new and useful Im provements in #Rocking-Chaim and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification,
and to the 'letters of reference Amarked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever' they occur.
To enable others skilled in'the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
Figure 1, Sheet l, is the side elevation of the chair; Figure 2, Sheet I I, is'th front elevation ofthe chair Figure 3 is the side elevation of the step, brace, and
3 Figureslland represent/the side elevation and the plan of the. brake; and V Figurer is theplan of the platform. The nature of my invention consists in a brake, to
vstop the rocking movement of the chair, and making it firm-and steady also, in providing. theI chair with platform, llbr.tlie purpose of saving the carpets iom wear, and-securing to the said platform the block of the brake.
A is the rocking-chair, to the front part of the frame of Awhich are affixed two movable braces, B B, supporting the step C, aiixedto them .on pivots.
To the braces B-B are pinned 1atchets, D D, connected, at therear end, by bar E, the notches of said ratchets catching and litting thercross-piece F of the chair.
' There is astring, d, secured to the saidbar E, which passes from the bar through au eye, O, secured under the chair-,and 'e'ye O', secured to' the side of the frame, bearing pin l1 at the end and serving the purpose of disengaging the ratchets from the cross-piece F.
A pulley maybe used in place of the eye O.
There is a loop, l, aixed to the top of the stepO, by means of which the step lcan be'raised by the foot ofthe sitter, the operation ofthe above-described arrangement being that the sitter, by his font, can raise the step toany desirableheight, to accommodate his legs, and can bring it down by operating thestring d.
The chair A is placed on the platform P, consisting of four or more pieces of wood, and provided with a cross-piece, p, about the middle, to which, block G, provided with a recess, g', is secured.'
The brake to stop the rocking motion ofthe chair consists of slide H, sitting and moving iu loops h h,l secured to the cross-pieces a a of the chair, and operatedby hand-lever I, that has its fulcrum atixed `to the leg .I of 'the chair.
The end 'of the slide H ts into the recess g' of the block G.
When it is desirable to stop the rocking-motion of.
the chair, the lever I is pushed off, and the `slide H, entering the recess g', makes the chair firm and steady.` The platform l? may be placed on rollers, if desira ble, and 4strips of steel, Wood, leather, or any other suitable material may be secured to the longitudinal pieces of the platform, nearer to their inside edges, and to the bottom of the rockers K K, nearer to their outside edges, for the purpose of keeping the chairlin its place on the platform, although other suitable devices can be used for the same purpose.-
To the fore end of the frame ofthe chair A, string L is attached, which string, from there, passes through an eye, m, or over a pulley, secured to the platform, up to the eye n of the arm of the chair, by means of which string the sitter can rock himself, in any position he assumes in the chair.`V
Having thus described my invention,
' I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patentl k l: A rocking-chair, A, provided with an adjustable step, G, and hand-lever, I, in combination with a' platform, P,.provided with a` recessed block, G, loops h, and slide H, all constructed and arranged to operate. as herein shown and described.
2. The locking-device, consisting of the lever I, slide H, and recessed block G, when constructed and ar-` ranged .to operate substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
oLAs JENSEN.
