IMPROVEMENT IN RECLlNlNG-CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,719, dated September 5, 1871.

To all whom it 'may concern.:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HEATH, of Bath, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reclining-Chairs, and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top view, Fig'. 2, a side elevation, Fig. 3, a rear elevation, Fig. 4, a vertical and longitudinal section of a chair provided with or constructed in accordance with my invention.

In this chair the seat A is pivoted at or near the middle of each end of it to the leg-frame or rests and turns upon a rod or shaft, B, arranged at or near the middle of such seat and extended across and supported by the leg-frame C. At its rear the seat has inclined legs D D, which, when the back E is upright or elevated to its highest position, rests on the lower bar ay of such back.

I The back is pivoted to the leg-frame at b b, parts of the back being extended below the pivots and having the seat arranged between the said parts. There is hinged to the lower bar a of the back a bar, F, provided with an inclined plane or cam, G, arranged with the bar, in manner as shown. This cam G rests on the front cross-bar or girt c of the leg-frame and between guides or posts d el extended up therefrom, as shown. At the front end of the bar F there is a frictionroller, e, that bears against an arm, H, which, at its upper end, is hinged to the seat. The lower part of the arm H bears against the legrest I, which, at its upper corners, is pivoted to the seat. From the pivots .r of the leg-frame there project upward two arms, Il I', to whose upper parts and to the back arm rests or rods K K are pivoted, all being as represented. A pawl, L, hinged to the seat and arranged as represented by taking into a notch, g, made in the bar F, when the back is at its highest position, serves to estop any forward movement ofthe said bar F, and, consequently, any falling of the back and raising of the leg-rest.

From the pawl a line or cord, h, is led upward to a guide, 1', projecting from the seat, thence through a guide, k, arranged in one side bar of the le g-franie. By laying hold of such cord and pulling 011 it the pawl may be raised out of the notch. While the back may be in the act of being declined the bar F will be moved forward and will carry the inclined plane with it. The conjoint operation of the two will cause the legrest to be forced upward.

If desirable there may be two of the bars F, each provided with a cam, as set forth, they, nnder such circumstances, being arranged near the sides of the leg-frame.

While the back may be in the act of being depressed the seat will tip backward or fall at its rear and rise at its front, thus securing avery easy position of it for the person who may be in the use of the chair at such time. As the back continues to descend to or near a horizontal position the seat will be raised to or about a horizontal position and the leg-rest will also be elevated.

From the above it will be seen that the seat has no sliding motion forward while the back is being manipulated or worked.

By the action of the lower bar of the back against the seat while the back is being depressed such seat will be raised, it falling while the said bar is acting against the inclined legs of the seat.

In the said chair I claim as my invention the following, viz:

1. The back E and the seat A, arranged with and pivoted to the leg-frame C, as set forth, and provided with the cross-bar ay and the inclined legs D D, or their equivalents, to enable them to operate substantially as specilied.

2. In combination with the back E, the seat A and the leg-frame (l, the bar F, the cani G, the arm H, and the leg-rest I all'being arranged and applied together, substantially as specitied.
