Letters Patent No. 99,388, dated February 1, 1870.

' IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-TONGUE SUPPORTS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making palt of the same and the pole or tongue of a wagon, having our invention attached to it.

' Figure 2 is a vertical central section through the tongue and axle.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bracket to support the spring.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the spring. A is the tongue of a wagon or other vehicle. B is the front axle.

' O is an iron bracket, constructed in the form as shown in fig. 3.

It will be seen, on reference to fig. 3, that the rear end of bracket 0 is divided into two prongs,a a, which havetwo downward-projectingpoints, e e.

This pronged or forked end. is made so as to pass on each side of the king-bolt f, as shown in fig. 2.

The front end of bracket 0 is bent down at right angles to the prongs a a, and then curved forward and upward, having-a screw cut on its end, and a crosspiece, D, working up and down the screw, as shown in Cross-piece D is turned up at each end, for the purpose of preventing spring E, which rests upon it, from slipping off.

Eis a. steel spring, constructed of two side-pieces and one end-piece, as shown in fig. 4.

The end-piece c, of spring E, is curved downward in its centre a little, was to embrace the end of the tongue, which may be slightly rounded underneath, where the end 0 of the spring E plays against or supports it.

The inner ends of spring E are bent a little upward, as shown in figs. 2 and 4, so that they will lie under the front axle, as shown in fig. 2.

'Spring E, it will be seen, presses against the under side of the axle B and the inner end of the tongue A, and is itself supported by cross-piece D, on bracket 0.

To attach this improved tongue-support to anywagon, it will be seen that we first place the bracket 0 0n the front axle, and in the centre of the same, the king-bolt f being between the prongs a (t. Then we raise the tongue, and pass the double spring E E from the under side of the tongue over the cross-piece D, until the ends (Z (Z of the spring pass under the axle B, as shown in fig. 2.

Our invention requires no bolts or staples, or fasteniugs-of any kind, by which to attach it toawagon. It iseasil y attached and detached, and the spring may be adjusted, by means of cross piece D, to carry the tongue at any required elevation.

\Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The double spring E, constructed as and for the purpose herein shown and described.

2. The combination of bracket 0, cross-piece D, and double spring E, with the tongue and front axle of a wagon, as herein described and set forth.
