CONVERTIBLE COUCH AND BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1911.
Application filed September 1, 1910. Serial No. 579,986.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, ISAAC MASON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gonvertible Couch and Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
1 foot sections are slidable lengthwise on the middle section, the head section having a fixed head and the foot section having movable members capable of forming the ends of the couch or the foot of the bed.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the piece of furniture folded to form a couch; Fig.
'2 is a similar view of the same extended to form a bed; Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the couch with the upholstery on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the bed with the mattress and bedclothes omitted; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the convertible mattress section and pillow.
The frame for the couch and bed is made in three sections, A, B and C, of which A is the head section, B the middle section and C the foot section. The bed spring is likewise made in three parts D, D, D of which the end sections D and D are pivotally connected with the middle section D by pivots D and D, and the middle section is connected at the pivots D with the sides B of the middle frame section B.
The upholstery for the couch and mattress of the bed is made in sections E, E, and a double section E made in the form of a bag open at one end to contain a pillow or cushion E as indicated in Fig. 6. When the piece of furniture is used as a bed, the section E fits and rests on the bed spring section D, the section EVfits and rests on the bed spring section D, and the two sections E fit and rest on the bed spring section D hen the piece of furniture is used as a couch, the section E forms the upholstered back of the couch, as indicated in Fig. 1, while the section E is the seat, and the pillows E are used loosely on the couch, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The middle section B of the frame has its sides B connected with each other by a box B, for storing bedclothes and the like when using the piece of furniture as a couch, and the sides B of the said middle section are provided with two sets of longitudinal guideways B B of which the guideways B are slidably engaged by the sides A of the head section A, and which sides A are rigidly connected with each other by a head piece A The set of guideways B is slidably engaged by side bars C of the foot section 0 of the frame, so that the head section A and the foot section G can be moved toward and from each other when folding or extending the parts to form the couch and the bed, respectively, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The bars O of the foot section 0 are rigidly connected with each other by a cross piece C having corner posts C adapted to rest on the floor.
The free end of the bed spring D is pro vided with a cross rail D adapted to engage a keeper F held on the head piece A of the head section A, and the free end of the bed spring section D is provided with a cross rail D adapted to engage keepers F held on the inner faces of the members C pivoted on the posts G of the foot section C, so as to permit of swinging the members C lengthwise along the bars 0 to form the ends of the'couch, as indicated in Fig. 1, and to allow of swinging the said members into transverse position against the cross bar C to form the foot board of the bed, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5. When the members C are in longitudinal position, as indicated in Fig. 3, they are fastened at their free ends to the head board A by suitable fastening devices G, such as a hook and eye, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4:.
The head board A of the head section A is provided on tpp with an extension H havand D engage the keepers F, F, then the parts are'held locked in place, that is to say, cannot be further extended or folded, as the extended bed spring prevents longitudinal movement in either direction. When the parts are in the extended position, the members C extend transversely, so that the keepers F are at the inside and are engaged by the cross piece D of the bed spring section D The middle section D of the bed spring is permanently attached by the pivot-s D to the middle frame section B, and the said middle section D of the bed spring has its frame reinforced by cross bars D extending downward into the box 13 as indicated in Fig. 5. The sections E, E and the two sections E are then placed in position on the extended bed spring so as to form a mattress for the bed.
When it is desired to convert the extended bed into a couch, the sections E and E are first removed from the bed spring and then the bed spring section D is swung upward and folded onto the top of the middle bed spring'section D, it being understood that in doing so the cross bar D disengages the keepers F, to unlock the members C and thus permit of swinging the same around through an arc of 270, to extend lengthwise of the bed for forming the ends of the couch, as shown in Fig.1.
The foot section C is now moved lengthwise toward the middle section D until the posts C abut against the lowerends of the sides B. The end sect-ion D of the bed spring is now swung upward into an approximately vertical position, and in doing so its end rail D disengages the keepers F to permit of sliding the head section A toward the middle section B, and then the members 0* are fastened by the fastening devices G to the head board A of the head section A, to lock the folded sections together. The extension H of the head board A is then removed and engaged with the vertical guideways C so as to form the front of the couch. The section E is now placed in vertical position against the bed spring sectionD to form the upholstered back of the couch, while the section E is placed on top of the bed spring section D to form the seat of the couch, as indicated in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the piece of furniture can be quickly and conveniently converted from a couch to a bed and vice versa, and the bed clothes can be readily stored in the box B when the piece of furniture is used as a couch, "it being understood that access to the box B can be had at the time the bed spring section D 'is folded upon the section D, and can be swung upward with the latter into open position, turning with the pivots D to permit of placing the bedclothes into the box B after which the sections D and D are swung downward to normal position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: i
