Description

N ntll (Sta-tet @met @Wina ISAAC TRUMR. OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA* Lettersv Patent No. 99,373, dated February 1, ,1870.
IMPROVEMENT "IN DRIVEN WELLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent `and making part of the same v provements in Implements for Sinking Tubular Vells;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in the employment of an enlarged head with hollow point, in connection with a slotted tube, as will be fully described hereinafter.
The main tube is provided with vertical slots or` ports, and a pin is placed transversely through the solid cylinder, with ends projecting, sothat when a sutcient depth is reached, and the main tube is drawn up to admit the water through the ports, this pin will arrest the further upward movement of the tube at the lower end of the slot.
Referring to the drawings- Figure'l is an elevation with the main tube down.l
Figure 2 is also an elevation with themain tube raised, to admit the water.
A represents the drill or solid cylinder, having an egg-shaped end, the large circumference of which projects a little beyond the tube, to form a shoulder for the lower end of it in driving.A
The extreme point a is hollow, to form a cuttinged e.
he lower end of the main tube B is provided with vertical slots or ports C C, and the solid cylinder extends a considerable distance up the tube, to cover the port and prevent the lling of sand in the main tube. When a sncient depth has been attained, the main tube is drawn up, which opens the ports for the admission of water to the main tube.
To prevent the cylinder from being drawn from the tube, a transverse pin, I), passes through it, with projecting ends, which prevents the further drawing of the tube when the lower ends of the slots are reached.
The advantages of my device are very great, as in case of prospecting for water, where a rocky formation is struck, and it becomes necessary to suspend operations on account of it, the whole implement can be 4quickly and easily withdrawn, and another location selected to make a new trial.
Great depth can also be attained with but little expense, as the usual accompaniment of machinery necessary for operating other devices for similar purposes is avoided.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Paty ent, is-
The tube B, with slots c, shank A, with pin D sliding in slot c, and' enlarged head, with hollow point a, the whole being combined as and for the purpose described. Y
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
