Description

identit mes W. G. RAOUL, OF INDEPENDENCE, LOUIEIANA.
Letters Patent .N 99,350, dated February 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GROQ'VING-MACHINE.
The Schedule Vreferred to in these Letters Patent and making peut of the same.
To all. whom fit may concern Be it known that I, W. GltAoUL, of Independence, in the parslrof Taugipahoa, and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and improved Gaining-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the nrt to made and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this spectication.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for cutting slots or gains in timber for framing, wlicreby it is designed to provide a simple and eiiieient machine for performing the work rapidlyy and cheaply, cutting the said gains at any required angle to the timber.
lhe invention consists in the arrangement of' an iinproved adjustable rotary cut-ter, a vertically and horizontally-adjustable feeding-table, and clamping-devices for holding the work to be operated on, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
Figure 1 represent-s a sectional elevation of my improved machine, taken on the line :c fc of iig. 2.
Figure 2 representsa plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A
A and B represent disks, ar one being xed and the other or from it.
'lhese disks calry in their outer sides radial cutters, D, for cutting down the shoulders of the gains or recesses. They also carry' between them/dat cutters, E, for planing out the substance between the end cutters D. The said cutters E are held in grooves and brackets on the inner faces oi' the disks, pitched tangentially to a circumferential liuc between the periphery and the axis ofthe disks.
The brackets F and grooves for holding the cutters are applied alternately to each disk, so that the disks may be moved to or from each other, for narrower or wider gains, which' may thus be cut by narrow tools, those ot' one disk lapping those ofthe other.
G represents a feeding-table, placed on ways, and provided with a large central circular opening, in which anged on a mandrel, C, being adjustable toward is placed an adjusting-ring, I, for holding the timber t0 be eut at any required angle to thecutting-tool, which works at the centre ot' this opening, and within this ring is another clamping-ring, IC.. t
'lhe table has an annular rebate, whereon the ring I rests, and a similar rebate in the latter supports the ring K.
Ihe ring I may be turned tc cured by a set-screw, L. It a which the timber N is clamped,V the cutting-tool.
The ring K carries holding-dog -r l adjustable vertically, and provided with se i s( ews l". The timber Q is placed under these dogs, and thc ring K is turned bythe hand-lever It, so as to bring the timber up against the pins M, ot' the ring l, snugly, where it is thus held whilel being cut.
'Io vary the depth of the gains or grooves, the ways H, wherein the table moves to feed the timber up to the cutter, are made adjustable vi 'f sally, and an adjusting-trarne, the two sidewbars hich have inclines T, working under the way s, is used, and it is provided with au adjusting-screw, U for moving it to and fro, for raising or lowering thi said ways.
The bearing V, of the mandrel oi.' the cutter, is made adjustable, so that the mandrel maybe readily removed and a mandrel carrying a saw substituted, to make the machine available for sawing-purposes.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentposition, and sepns M, against w holding against 1. The arrangement of disks A B, cutters D E, manable, G, of an @hen arranged (t. RAOUL.
