W. F. LUQKE. HOLLOW WORK SUPPORT FOR LEATHER WORKING MACHINES..
APLIcATloN FILED SEPT. s, 1909.

f HOLLow woniesurronr `ron. Lnariinn-wonniivd I' f, f i
yTo all I'wh/ 0m 'it may concern:
Be it knownx that I, ViL-LIAM Lucini, a subject of t-he Empire of Germany'.r but `now*residing in Peabody,` county o-f Essex, and-"State of ltlassachusetts, have invented an ltmproven'ient in Hollow fork-Summits for Lea`ther-7orking Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is .a specification, like letters onl the drawings represent- .ing like parts.
This invention relates to a hollow work support for leather working machines, and has for its object to provide a work support of the character'speeiied, with which the' work, vsuch as a hide or skin, may be supported and' presented to 'the opera'tingtool, such 'as a. lbladed cylinder,` so as to be most eiciently and economically treated. To this end, the hollow work support having a f yielding port-ion upon which the hide or skin 1s supported-,r is provided within it with means for Alimiting the youtward movement of the yield-ing' portion under the influence of an increased internal pressure.
In the presentv instance, the invention is show-n as embodied in a cylinder or bed roll employed in machines for'fleshing and unhairing hides orskins and to which the invention is particularlyapplicable.
These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the .end of this specification.
Figure 1 is an elevation and section of a bed roll embodying this invention, and Fig. 2, a cross section on the line 2 2, Fig-` 1.
In the presentinstance, the invention is shown as embodied in a. bed roll comprising end disks a, 79, secured as by bolts or screws c on a shaft d, and an intermediate cylindrical body portion capable of yielding under eX- ternal pressure. The yielding body portion may be made as herein shown and is provided with a cylinder f ofleather or other \s uitable material, which is secured at its ends by clamping ringsy g to disks 7L of metal,
mounted on the shaft d between the disks extends.
A, ring 13 of rubber may be interposed between the end disks 71. and the shaft a?,
which cooperates with the rubber sleeve 10 and its-end flanges 1-2 to render the hollow -are extended, (see Fig. 2). The bed roll may other fluid under pressure and inthe present serial no. 516,733. rf
Ibbed` roll air-tight about the shaft of. The
nonnilinirienniivsj Speeiicatcin olf Letters lt .ed application inea september 8,1909. .i f, y n
rubber sleeve 10 is enveloped in a cylinder or covering 15 of leatherv or other suitable material, and the yielding body portion of the bed roll thus formed may be provided with a wearing surface in the form of metal rings 16, which are retained in place between the end disks a., 72 by the Abolts or rods 17,'l
and-which are capable of bodily movement by means of the holes 18 of larger diameter than the bolts 17 through which the' latter befilled with air or instance, the shaft Z is shown as provided with a passage QO'through which the air or other fluid may be admitted into the hollow bed roll. The 'passage 2() may be closed after the Huid forced therein has reached a predete'irminedl pressure or it may be left open and connected with a suitable pressure 'supply tank or vessel not shown.
Thefpresent invention has for'its primary objectJ to provide a hollow bed trolliwith" means within it, whereby an increase of internal pressure, due to a thicker portion lof the hide' or skin` being'interpose'd between the bed roll and the operating tool, suchas the blade cylinder or roll.v now commonly used in machines of this class, does not probey'ond the normal position of 'the same, thereby obtaining la uni'formaction of the operating tool or bladed'cylinderupon the thick and thin portions of the work. In
ject other portions of the bed roll'outwardly the present instance, onearrangement of devices or means is shown for accomplishing this result, which consists of a plurality of devices, secured at their outer end to thef yielding body portion and having provision at their inner ends for engaging the shaft d,
so as to arrest and limit the outward movement of said yielding body portion under the infiuence of an increase in internal pressure. The "devices referred vto yare herein shown as' substantially radial arms 30' pro-v vided at their inner4 ends with elongated loop portions through which the shaft d extends, and having their outer ends eX- tended' through. the inner cylinder f and provided with but-tons or heads 33, which serve to secure `the' said arms to the yielding body portion of the bed roll.
lThe arresting devices are distributed about the roll, so as to insure the yielding bed being properly held in its normal position. y
In operation with the bed roll herein shown, the bladed cylinder and the bed roll are arranged and adjusted with relation to veach other, so as to treat the thin portions .which support they thinner portions of the 'hide or skin, and also upon other portions of the bedroll, which are uncovered by the hide or skin, wit-h the result that in the absence of the present invention, the thinner portions of the hide are pressed outwardly toward the operating tool, which in the case of afleshing machine removes too much of the flesh at the thin portions of the hide and in the case 0f an unhairing machine scrapes and injures the grain of the hide or skin, while those portionsA of the bed roll which are uncovered by the hide or skin,
arel liable to be out by the bladed cylinder. By means vof the presentinvention, these objectionable features are overcome and both the thick and thin portions of the hide or skin are subjected to the saine or sub'- stantially the same pressure.
In the present instance, I have illustrated -the hollow work support in the form of a roll, but' it is not desired to limit the ine" vention inthis respect. So also, it is not desired to: limit the invention to the particular form of means within the hollow work sup-` essere? port for arresting the outward movement of the yielding portion thereof.
Claims.
The combination with a hollow fluidtight work support containing an elastic iiuid under pressure and having a yielding port .and attached thereto and coperating with said yielding portion to limit the out 'ward movement of 'the latter under the in .iiuence ott tluid pressure within kthe saine, substantially as described 2. rlf'he combination with a hollow wor tion, and .means located within said roll and coperating with said yielding body portion to limit the outward movement of the latter under 'the iniiuence of *fluid pressure within the roll, substantially as described. 3.- The combination with a shaft, a bed roll )mounted thereon and provided with a yielding body portion,a`nd devices vwithin said roll coperating with the said yielding body portion and with said shaft to limit the outward mo'vement of the said body portion under the iniiuence of fluid pressure within the roll, substantially as described. 4. The combination with a shaft, a bed yielding body portion, and arms connected with said yielding bodyportion land provided with looped portions encircling' said shaft, substantially .as and tor the purpose specified. A f j En testimony whereof, l have signed my naine to this specification in the presence Ot' two 'subscribing witnesses.
