Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM Jonnson STREALY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lewisburg, in the county of Greenbrier and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved tool to be used as an attachment for a mowing machine or reaper, whereby various operations can be performed in the fiel d, such as removing knife sect-ions, punching out rivets, straightening section bars and the like, without the necessity of returning to the shop.

An object of this invention is to provide a device which ordinarily can be carried by inserting the handle thereof on the pole of the reaper or mower, and which, when it is desired to use the same, can be readily clamped onto the wheel of the machine and utilized to great advantage.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device which will be simple in. construction, inexpensive to manufacture, exceedingly strong and durable, and readily attachable and detachable.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2' is a top plan view, showing the device attached to the rim of a mower or reaper wheel; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 41 is a detail view of a preferred form of handle.

By reference more particularly to the separate parts, it will be seen that the device is very simple and comprises practically three separate pieces, which are the body portion 1, the clamp lever 2, and a bolt or pin 3 for pivotally securing the clamp lever to the body portion. The body portion 1 is in the form of an anvil having a smooth upper surface for the greater portion thereof, whereby a considerable amount of pounding can be accomplished thereon. This body portion,however, is provided with a groove 4, in which may be set the section bar of a mowing machine or reaper, when it is desired to straighten the same or perform any other operation thereon. Within this groove 4, there is also provided a triangular depression 5, which may be used to knock out rivets, or for any other suitable purpose. On one end of the top or anvil portion of the body 1, there is also provided a recess 6, which may be utilized to leave room to knock out rivets from the cutter bar of a mowing machine, or for any other suitable purpose.

On the side of the body portion 1, there is provided a bracket 7, which is spaced apart from the body portion to form a slot 8, in which may be inserted one of the sections of the cutter bar when it is desired to sever the rivets so as to remove one of the sections from the section bar. The outer sides of this bracket 7 are preferably sloping, as at 9, so as to permit the wider portions of the knife sections to come in comparatively close juxtaposition to the bracketwithout detracting from the strength thereof.

It will be noted that there is provided on one side of the body portion 1, a flange 10, having a slot 11 therein, through which extends the clamping lever 2, which is pivotally connected to an extension of the flange by means of the pivot pin or bolt 3. This clamp lever is provided with a handle 12 and a cam 13 gradually increasing in dimensions and projecting from one end of the handle. The cam 13 is adapted to engage under the rim 14 of a wheel on the reaper or mowing machine and aid in securing the tool to the wheel. For the purpose of fur ther security, the body portion 1 is provided with a flange 15, extending parallel to the flange 10 and provided with a lug 16 adapted to engage under the rim 1 1.

The clamp lever 2 may be connected to the body portion 1 by means of the pivot 3 extending through a single circular opening therein, but it is preferable that the clamp lever 2 be adjustable relative to the body portion, so as to allow for the different sizes of wheels. For this purpose, it is is desired to remove a section knife from the cutter bar, the knife is inserted in the slot- 8, and the section bar rested on the top of the anvil. By use of a hammer or monkey- 'wrench, a few blows on the section knife will sever the rivets connecting the sect-ion knife with the section bar. These rivets can readily be'punched out by placing them over the depression 5 or the recess 6. If it is desired to straighten the section bar, it may be placed in the groove 4 and readily trued up.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and efficient tool which can readily be attached to and detached from wheels of various sizes, and thus enable a number of repairs to be made in the field, which would ordinarily have to be done in the shop.

While I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, modifications and alterations which may come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a body portion offering an anvil working surface, said body portion having flanges extending from opposite sides, forming a channel therebetween whereby said body portion is adapted to engage the rim of a wheel, of a lug on one of said flanges, and a clamping lever on the other of said flanges having a graduallyincreasing cam adapted to engage under the rim of the wheel, said clamping lever being adustably connected to said body portion, so as to allow for different sizes of wheels.

2. The combination with a body portion offering a working surface, of a clamping lever adapted to secure said body portion to the rim of a wheel, said clamping lever having a cam thereon and also having a slot therein, said slot having recesses on opposite sides arranged in staggered relation, and a pivot adapted to engage said recesses for pivotally securing said clamping lever to said body portion. 7
