Description
waited grates flaunt can;
E. GRIFFIN, OF PEPPERELL, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND F.
OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 99,310, dated February 1, 1870.
To all whomit may concern:
Be itknown that I, E. W. GRIFFIN, of Pepper-ell, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented Improvements in Hand Threshing-Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompan ing .drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, making part of this specification, of which.
- Figure l is a side elevation of the machine, and
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same. I
The letter A represents the frame or body of the thresher;
B, the top or cover;
.a a, the plates or disks, with teeth a a, 860.;
I) b, 860., the serrated heaters;
c, the corrugated hopper or feed-box;
d, the crank, and d, the axle of the wheel;
.e and j; geared wheels; and.
g g, springs upon the bolts, attaching the disks.
The machine is for threshing grain, grasses, beans, and like products, by hand.
The invention consists in improvements upon the same, for the more elfectual working thereof, and are explained as follows, the accompanying drawings exhibiting the exterior and interior parts thereof:
A represents the braces at the top and bottom, and the ends of the frame are open, as seen in the two figures. The same is made of wood or any suitable material.
B represents the top orcover, which may be removed at pleasure, when not in use.
a a are plates or disks, made concavo-convex, or plane-convex, or with two plain surfaces, with teeth set in the convex surfaces, or surfaces opposite each other, 'as seen in fig. 2. These plates or disks are pendulously attached to the sides of the frame by a bolt, screw, and nut; and between the disks and the-sides of the frame, and around the bolt, are spiral springs g g. These disks are so hung or attached to the frame, that pressure upon the teeth and surfaces will cause them to spring back or-yield to the pressure. The teeth are made conical, and arerepresentedin both figures in the drawings. The fliers or beatersb b, 850., are made of wood or metal, and are serrated, as seen in said figures.
frame. with two sides, joined by I This construction of the heaters more effectually performs the threshing than plain heaters, in combination with the disks. ,It also, in combination with the toothed disks, causes the straw to pass through better, when in wads, occasioned by too great quantity of feed.
The feed-box c is corrugated or serrated in that part of it withinthe frame A.
The advantage of this form is this: The effect of the blows of the serrated beater-s is to draw the straw toward the right side of the feed-box, and the corrugated bottom will tend'to counteract this. I
The heaters are inserted into a hub upon an axle,
- like a wheel, and motion is communicated by means of the geared wheels f; situated on the axle d, and c,
situated on the crank-shaft d, which is moved by hand.
'Fig. 2 clearly indicates the position and construction of thevarious parts of the machine.
To the general form of the machine, I make .10 .claim; but the improvements, viz, the toothed disks, combined and arranged with other parts of the machine, th'e. serrated heaters, and the feed-box corrugated, the same being combined and arranged with the other parts of the machine, are new and usefuhinventions; and
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The'serrated heater 1), constructed and arranged upon the hub and axle ll, in combination with the frame A, the crank d, and the disks or a, all substantially operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The construction and arrangement of the toothed plate or disk (1, with its spring-device and attachment to the frame A, arid in combination with the-said frame and the heaters b b, &c., all operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. The corrugated feed-box 0, in combination with the -parts of the machine, viz, the frame A, the heaters b b, &c., and the disks a a, operating for the purpose specified.
