Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
DEMSEY FOREST, OF MOTTOMOSA, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BENDING STIRRUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Fatent No. 99,303, dated February 1, 1870.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DEMsEY FoEEsT, of lWIottomosa,in the county of Alascosa and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Stirrup-Machine; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, by which those skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient machine for bending and shaping stirrups for saddles.
The invention comprises a clamping-vise with jaws of peculiar construction and adaptation for bending the thin wood plates or sheets around the lever-former, which is used by the operator to bend the blanks down into the formingrecesses of the jaws, and hold them until the said jaws are clamped together and the blanks reduced to the iinished form and secured to the blocks by which the suspending-straps are connected, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved machine; and Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same, partly broken out.
A represents a pair of clampingjaws, pivoted to the support B at C, and provided with a clamping-screw, D, in a manner similar to .bench-vises, except that both jaws are pivoted. .I may, however, use vises with one xed jaw; but I prefer to have them both movable. Between the said jaws springs E may be arranged in any suitable way to throw them open when the screw is retracted. The upper ends of these jaws are recessed in the faces fronting each other, the said recesses being, when the jaws are clamped together, of the form required to constitute a mold corresponding to the exterior form of the stirrups below the necks, bywhich the straps are connected.
F represents a forming-lever, arranged to engage in a notch in a post at G, for a fulcrum for pressing theblanks down into the said mold formed in the tops of the jaws. This lever, at the place where it passes through the mold, is designed to bein cross-section of the form corresponding to the interior of the inished stirrups, as shown at II. Theblanks ofthe stirrups, which are to be made of thin sheets or strips of wood, iirst being cut or otherwise shaped as required, are placed upon the tops of these jaws A, over the recesses or mold, the jaws being sufficiently opened, and the forming-lever is used to press the blanks down int'o the recesses. The jaws are then screwed up and the said blanks shaped around the former, as shown at I, after which the blocks or necks/K for the connection of the suspendinglstraps are inserted and riveted. The former is then withdrawn and the iinished stirrup discharged.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent# The improved method of forming stirrups by means of the clamping-jaws, recessed as described, and the forming-lever F, all substantially as specified.
