Description

LPETERS. PNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASH NGTON D C gatwt @twine M. K. BUTTERFIELD, OF EDDYVILE, NEW YORK.
Letters lPatent N 99,2818., dated Feb/rud/ry 1, 1870.
IMPRovsMeNT 1N FENCE-POSTS. A
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 'of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, M. K. BUTTERFInLD, of Eddyville, inthe county of Gattaraugus, and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fence-Post; and I do hereby declare that the follou ing isa full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the let-ters and lfigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a view of the fence-post as it appears in front.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
My invention relates to fence-posts; and
It consists in improvements upon my patent of September 21, 1869, intended to render my said patented post more generally useful in the construction offences and gates.A
My post is constructed of cast-iron, as described in my said Letters Patent, but instead of the openings therein, and hooks for attaching the fence-rails, I cast flanc-hes or shelves thereon, as shown by a of the drawinffs.
:I also make the top of the post sharp and pointed, as shown at c.
These devices enable the operator to attach the 'fence-rails' to the posts, by making grooves in the ends of said rails, that will clasp the thin sides of the posts in the form of jaws, and find support upon the shelves a. The upper rails may be cut out and lapped over, as shown on iig. 1, the end of each being pierced and held in place by the pointed top of the post, as represented on said figure.
This method otattachment is peculiarly well adapted to picket fences, but other styles of fences may be constructed in the same.manner. Vhen desirable, the rails may be passed to their supports from the top of the posts.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is- 4 The Hauch a and point o, as an improvement upon my fence-post patented September 21, 1869.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two wit- IIBSSGS.
M. K. BUTTERFIELD.
