Letters Patent No. 99,280, dated February 1, 1870.
IMVPROVN'EMENT IN POWDER-KEG.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To, all whom it may concern Like letters of reference reier tclike parts in theseveral views.
Objective..
The' object of this invention is to produce a safe, strong, and cheap keg, consisting of a compound of metal and wood, for the reception and transportation 'of gunpowder, as hereinafter more fully described.
Descriptive.
In tig. 1-
A represents the side or body of the keg, and which is constructed of sheet-metal. p
B, thebottom, is attached thereto by any of the. usuallocks or seams adopted by the manufacturers of tin-ware.
Around the upper part of the keg, near to the top, is impressed a groove, C, forming thereby, on the inside of the keg, a shoulder, D, iig. 4.
l Upon said shoulder, and closely fitting the inside of 'the keg, above the same, is inserted a Wooden top or head, E, havingan aperture or stopper-hole, E.
vsuperimposed upon said head is a metal plate or auxiliary head, G, iitting'closely the inside of the keg, as does the wooden'head, also provided with a stopper-hole, the edge of which is bent downward, form ing a partial llining to the hole in the head E.
The two heads G E, as thus placed in relation to eachother, are secured thereatgby turning over and side of the keg, as shown at G. By this means, the two heads are firmly and securely attached to each other, and to the sides of the keg, thereby making a tight, safe, 'and durable top to the same, and providing a depth to the hole that will embrace the stopper in a permanent and reliable manner. l
It will be obvious that in `a keg as thus constructed, the head thereof cannot be easily forced`in, per consequence of the shoulder D, on which it is made to rest. Also, neither can it be forced therefrom, per consequence of the lapping down thereon of the edgeY of the keg; hence, a safe., light, and durable keg is provided for the holding and transportation of-powder.
Fig. 2 shows a slight modification of o'. 4.
It will be observed that in this keg, the metallic or auxiliary head 'H is not fitted to the inside of the keg, but is made somewhat larger in diameter, so as to project over the sides upon the outward edge of the keg, which it embraces, forming a double look-seam, as shown at I, tig. 2, which represents a transverse section of the head and sides of the keg.
It will be seen that said head is so constructed that its edge is turned down, formiuga deep annular ange, K, the lower edge of which rests uponv the shoulder D, which prevents it from being pressed inwardly, and which is prevented'from being forced' outwardly by the turning down and lapping upon the head, the edge of the keg, as shown at O.
Claim.
What we claim as 'our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The body A, with shoulders D D, in combination with wooden head E and auxiliary head H, in the manner as described, and for the` purpose set forth.
