To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE W. PATTEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Limestone, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvement in lifting devices for barrels, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly effective in operation and which may be readily adjusted to fit barrels of var'ous sizes.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of-parts hereinafterfully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention and in which,

This device is primarily intended for use in warehouses or the like and is adapted to be attached to a crane or conveyer and consists essentially in what may be a body portion and a securing'portion. The body portion comprises a U-shaped resilient member 3 having its ends flattened and curved inwardly toward each other as designated by the numeral 4. The securing and gripping portion comprises a pair of gripping arms 5, which are pivotally connected with the'flattened portion of the body 1 as at 6. These gripping members 5 have their lower extremities provided with oppositely disposed ofi'set teeth 7 and by reference to Fig. l of the drawing it will be noted that these teeth project toward a flat-tened portion of the body. The opposite ends of the gripping members 5 are provided with suitable eyes and each of these eyes is adapted for the rotated upon the pivots reception of a suitable link 8. Both of these links have their free ends also provided with eyes and the links are connected together through the medium of a suitable ring member 9. This ring member 9 is adapted to be secured to the elevating and conveying device.
It is to be understood that the resilient body may be readily bent so as to ad'ust itself to the various sizes of barrels and w on the flattened engaging faces 4 of the body are properly positioned upon the exterior of the barrel an upward pull upon the ring 9 will force the links toward each other, thus swinging the gripping members 5 upon their pivots 6 and causing their offset teeth to engage the chimes of the barrel. When the pull upon the ring 9 has been released, it will be apparent that the member 3 will spread, causing the members 5 to be automatically 6 and thus disconnect the teeth 7 from the chimes of the barrel. It will be further noted that the greater the weight of the barrel, the tighter the said engaging teeth 7 Will engage the said chime.

will be noted that I have provided a simple and effective device for the purpose intended and it is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described the preferredembodiment of the invention as it now appears to me, minor details of construction within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
