HOOD FOR FRICTION-SAWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1911.
Application filed December 12, 1910. Serial No. 596,940.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. FnRoUssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoods for Friction-Saws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of my improved hoods applied to the friction cutting disk of a vertical cutting machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the hood.
Fig. Sis a front elevation of the hood. Fig.
4 is a plan view of the hood with the door thereof partially open. Fig. 5 is a detail section of the lower portion of the hood, and showing a body of water therein through which the periphery of the friction disk travels during operation.
My invention relates generally to friction cutting machines, and more particularly to hoods or housings for the disks or saws forming a part of said friction cutting machines. The particular hood or housing disclosed in this application is particularly adapted for the type of friction cutting machine shown and described in an application for patent filed by me August 20, 1910, Serial No. 578,186.
The principal objects of my invention are first; to provide a simple housing or hood which inoloses the greater portion of the friction cutting disk, thereby acting as a guard for the protection of workmen and persons adjacent the machine while the same is in operation, second; to arrange a door on one side of the hood or housing which may be readily opened when desired for the purpose of removing and replacing the friction cutting disk, third; to arrange on the interior of the hood or housing perforated pipes for the purpose of spraying jets of water on the friction disk to cool the same while in operation; and fourth, to construct the lower portion of the hood or housing in such a manner as to maintain a body of water in the lower portion of the hood through which body of water the periphery of the friction disk passes while in operation.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the main frame of a vertical friction saw, 2 the motor and saw carrying member, which is arranged to slide vertically upon the front portion of the main frame 1, 8 the work support arranged in front of the main frame, 4 the bracket against which the work is held while being acted upon by the cutting disk, and 5 the friction cutting disk which is mounted upon the motor shaft.
6 designates the rear one of the side walls of the hood or housing, which rear wall is rigidly fixed by means of straps or brackets 7 to the sliding member 2, and fixed in any suitable manner to the edge of the plate 3 is a heavy sheet metal band 8 which forms the front and peripheral walls of-the hood or housing.
The portion 8 which forms the front wall of the hood or housing is provided with a vertical slot 9, through which projects a portion of the friction cutting disk.
10 designates a plate which. forms one of the side walls of the hood or housing, and this plate is hinged upon a vertically disposed rod 11 carried by the rear side of the hood or housing, and thus said plate 10 performs the function of a door. The edge of the plate 10 is provided with a series of outwardly projecting fingers 12, the outer ends of which are bifurcated and adapted to receive the outer ends of bolts 13, which latter are hinged to the flange 8. The threaded ends of these bolts are adapted to receive winged nuts 14, and thus means is provided for holding the edge of the door 10 against the front of the flange 8.
l5 designates a curved perforated pipe positioned on the inside of the door 10, and connected to the central portion of said pipe and extending through the door 10 is a tubular extension 15 A flexible pipe 16 is connected to the extension 15 and leads to a water supply pipe 16 located to the rear of the housing, and leading from this supply pipe 16 through the rear portion of the peripheral wall of the housing is a pipe 16', which is connected to the interior of the housing with a curved perforated pipe 16, which latter is fixed to the wall 6 of the housing. The water supply pipe 16 is provided with a suitable valve whereby the flow of water to the curved pipes 15 and 16 is controlled, and the perforations in said pipe are so arranged to throw jets of Water on to the sides of the friction cutting disk positioned within the hood or housing. While the machine is in operation, the excess water delivered onto the friction cutting disk and thrown off against the interior of the hood or housing will gravitate to the bottom of said hood or housing, and there form a body of water, which has a cooling effect upon the edge of the friction cutting disk while the same is in use.
The door 10 can be readily opened by loosening the nuts 14 on the bolts 13 and swinging said bolts out of the bifurcated ends of the fingers 12, and it is not necessary to disconnect any of the water supply pipes when the door is opening, owing to the use of the tube 16, which leads to the curved perforated pipe 15.
While I have shown and described my improved hood or housing applied to a vertical friction saw, it will be readily understood that said hood or housing can be, with slight modifications, applied to various other forms of machines employing high speed friction cutting disks or saws.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved hood can be readily made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
