AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.

To all whom it may concern: v
,Be it known that we, CHARLES R. PARKER and llnrfnnN D. VIRT, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and useful Automobile-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks for use in connection with the controlling lever of an automobile, its object being toprovide simple means which can be readily placed and secured in the path of the lever soas to hold it in a predetermined posit-ion and thus prevent unauthorized persons from tampering with the machine in an endeavor to operate the same. Another object is to provide a lock which is very simple in construction and will not readily get out of order.
\Vith' these and other ob]ects in view the invention consists of certain novel details .ot construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of the floor of an automobile of that type wherein the controlling lever 2 is mounted to work within a slot 3 formed within the floor and without the useof a guide plate. Automobiles of this type are provided with metal braces 4 upon the chassis close to the Walls of the slot in the floor and it is designed, in the present instance, to'provide a lock which will cover or fill all portions of the slot eX- cept where the lever is located, this look including means for en aging the metallic braces 4 to hold the lock in place.
As shown in the drawings the lock consists of a base plate 5 adapted to cover all portions of the slot 3 except where the lever 2 is located, this plate being provided adja cent one end with a depending lug 6 adapted to fit in one end portion ofthe slot 3 Wllilfl another. lug 7 extends downwardly 4 from the other end portion of the plate and is adapted to project into the slot 3 and contact with the lever '2. A boss 8 extends downwardly from the plate 5 at a point between the two lugs and has a stem 9 journaled within it, this stem carrying a button 10 at its lowerend, the length of the button being greater than the width of the slot 3. This button may be securedto the stem in any suitable manner, as by upsetting the end of the stem, the stem being adapted to -rotate with the button. A reinforcing web 11 may be formed upon the bottom of the plate between the lugs and boss.

In using the lock the lever 2 is shifted to a position at one end of the slot 3 and where placed across the slot and with the lugs 6 and 7 projecting into said'slot between one end thereof and the lever, as shown in Fig. 1. Before the plate can thus be positioned, it is necessary to swing the wing 13 laterally in order to partly rotate the button 10 so that it can be inserted through the slot. After the lock has been applied,the.wing 13 is swung back against the ear 15 and .the button 10 thus moves underthe side walls of the slot and positively locks the plate to the floor. By then placing a padlock in en gagement with the ear and wing, the same can be securely fastened together and the lever 2 will thus be held against actuation until the plate 5 has been detached.

Various changes can of course be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from-the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
