a citizen of the United States, residing in Chieago, in the county of Cook and St'ate of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction-Butters for Railway- Cars, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates toim rovements in friction buffers for railway passenger cars.

When the parts are assembled, as shown inaFig. 3, the stop thimble .28, which is interposed between the head of the connecting bolt and the wedge 10, enables the secondary butter springs 19, 20 to be put under an initial compression by the connecting bolt sufficient to take "up and compensate for all wear of the friction cushioning mech anism. -To hold the friction shell or cylinder 8 rigidly in-place in the buffer frame or cradle 2, I provide the same with removable anchor straps or bands 32, having threaded ends 33, furnishedwith nutsfi t and ,cotters 35. Thebuffer frame or cradle 2 is further provided with a separate piece or removable bottom plate 36.

a friction shell and friction shoes and wedge within the shell, a primary buffer'spring reacting at one "end against the front buffer cap and at its other end agamst said friction shoes, a secondary buffer spring reacting at one end against the'frietipn shell and at itsother end against the friction shoes, said front buffer cap acting through the.
