Be it known that I, GEORGE F. S'roNnY, of
Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Mold for Twyers and other Hollow Articles, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation illustrating the manner of forming the jacket core of the twyer mold; Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the jacket mold. removed from the forming box; Fig. 3'is a sectional elevation showing the way in which the center core is molded; Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation showing the completed twyer mold; Fig. 5 is a plan of the core ring with the detachable lifting handles in place thereon; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the chill drag plate.
My invention has relation 'to the molding of twyers and other hollow articles, and is designed to provide a mold of this character which will not require the use of a drag section; and also to provide means of novel character for properly adjusting and centering the cores in the mold.
The precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof,
and which will now be described, it beingpremised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts by those skilledin the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Referring to Fig. 4,-the numeral 2 designates the flask, 3-the jacket core set therein,
4 the center core, 5 the center core arbor, and 6 the chill drag plate upon which the flask 2 andthe core jackets are set in a manner hereinafter described.'-
7 designates the sand filling of the mold. In accordance with'my invention, the center core 4 is molded in a core box 8, which is set on a master plate 9, in which is also set the vented, core arbor 5. A hopper 9 is placed on the core box 8, and the box is rammed with green sand. To facilitate the handling of the core, the core arbor 5 carries drag plate at its upper end a threaded sleeve 11, into i which may be screwed a nut 12 having a handle 13. 18 is a-core ring seated in the stripping plate 15, and having seats 18 therein to receive tapered plugs 19 through which are threaded the lower ends ofvent pipes 20, which extend upwardly into, the space between the core box and the core mandrel.
' 19 designates nuts which engage the lower threaded ends of the vent pipes.
21 is a hopper supported on the core box 14 and having a central .cone 22 around which the sand is rammed down into the space around the vent pipes for the purpose of forming the core jacket. After this operation is completed, the jacket core is removed, by mc'ans of detachable handles 23,
which engage the ring 18, and said ring with the core thereon 18 supported on a plate 24 in v the mannershown in Fig. core rlng to be removed.
In building up the twyer mold shown in 2 to permit the Fig. 4, the center and jacket cores are placed on the chill drag plate 6, the latter having a central recess. 25 to receive the base portion 26 of the center core arbor 5. The dra plate 6 is also.provided with openings 2 therethrough, countersunk at the upper face of the plate to receive the plug 19, and also countersunk tint-he lower side to receive the nuts 19*. The chill drag plate is provided with the groove 31, which communicates with thedownwardly extending pouring gate 32, and from which the hot metal flows upwardly into the mold. The lower'portions of the vent pipes 20, between the lower end of the jacket core and the plugs 19, are provided with the sleeves or thimbles 33, which form the openings into the large end of the;
hollow wall of the molded article:
The advantages of myinvention arise from theprovision of a mold which does. not require the use of a drag section, and which 15 provided with means whereby the center and jacket cores may be directly supported on a and properly centered and held thereon.
It will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of the construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. since \Vhat I claim is: v
1. "In a mold of the character described, a detachable center core arbor having a core supporting base, a. drag plate having a seat for said base and havlng seats to center a jacket core and means for securing the. jacketcore in centered position on said plate.
2. in a mold of the character described, a
drag plate, a flask supported thereon, a center core having a coresupporting base, said base detachably resting in a recessin said drag plate, anchoring means seated in the drag plat c and a jacket core secured to the anchoring means.
3. Ina mold of the character described a drag plate, a center core,- an arbor for said core detaohably Supported directly on said drag plate, a jacket core having vent pipes therein, said pipes having projecting plugs at their lower ends and the drag plate having seats for said plugs.
4. In a mold of the character described a drag plate having a central seat for a center core arbor and also having a series of concentric seats a jacket core having centering means secured in said seats and a center core arbor having a core centering base detach ably secured in place in the central seat for said arbor.
In a mold of the character described a jacket core having a plurality of vent pipes therein, said pipes having frust-o-conical pro,-
jecting portions at their lower ends, anchor- I mg means on said pro ect1ng portions and a drag plate having frustoconical seats for the anchoring means.
