To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DE PLANQUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1 Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in trolley guides, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive guide which will fit any ordinary harp such as in common use, which will add but a trifle to the original cost of the harp, which will necessitate but a slight change in the trolley structure requiring merely a longer journal and longer locking pins therefor, the latter serving to secure the guide to the harp.
A further object is to provide improvements of this character whlch when in position on a harp will serve to guide the trolley wheel into place in contact with the electric conductor. WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a View in eleva tion at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a view in longitudinal cross section. Fig. 4, is a view of the inner face of one of the guide members, and Fig. 5, is a View of the outer face of one of the harp members. 1, is a trolley pole, and 2, 2, the members of an ordinary harp thereon supporting the journal 3, on which a trolley wheel 4: is mounted and adapted to run in contact with an electric conductor 5. The harp illus trated, is one in common use, which is provided at each of its members with openings 6 and recesses 7.
8, 8, are the two members of my improved guide. These members 8, 8, are recessed as shown at 9 to fit over the upper end portion of the harp members 2, 2, and in this recessed portion 9, enlargements 10 are provided to fit into the recesses 7 in the harp, and an enlargement or lug 11 is provided to fit into the openings 6 in the harp. In other words, each guide member 8 is constructed 11 to enter the opening 6 in the harp, and each guide member is provided with an opening 12 to receive the journal 3.
13, 13, represent pins which are commonly employed for lockingthe journal 3 in the harp, but in this instance these pins 13, 13, are slightly longer than the ordinary pins used for such a purpose, and are passed through openings 14 in the guide members 8, before they enter the openings in the harp ant. the journal, and they also project into no lies or recesses 15 in the lugs or enlargemer t" 11 of members 8.
Each member 8 is provided at its forward edge, with an upwardly and outwardly flaring guide finger 16, which projects above and outwardly from the periphery of the trolley wheel 4, and serves to afford a relatively wide entrance for the electric condoctor 5, so as to guide the same against the periphery of the wheel 1 and render the operation of finding the wire a comparatively easy one.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus descrlbed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a trolley harp having openings in its members and alined bearings in its members, of a trolley wheel between said members of the harp, a journal supporting said trolley wheel and located in said bearings said journal having transverse openings, guide members recessed to receive the free ends of said harp members and having an internal contour conforming to the outer contour of the harp members, enlargements on said guide members projecting into and fitting the openings in the harp members, said guide members, harp members, and enlargements having openings registering with the openings in the journal, and pins in said registering openings, substantially as described.
2.
