UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK S. YODER, OF WERNERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 KENZIE N.
YODER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROLLEY-WHEEL.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. YODER, citizen of the United States, residing at Valernersville, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-llheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trolley Wheels and the object is to provide a device cf this class in which the tendency of the wheel to jump the wire against which it travels, is reduced to a minimum. To this end I have constructed a wheel with a plurality of bearing surfaces between the flanges, one of which, the central one, is deeper than the others and in Which the edges of the larger diameter surfaces are tapered at given points to serve as guides for the purpose cf maintaining contact between the Wheel and the Wire at the central or deeper groove.
My invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which:-
Figure 1 is an elevation of my Wheel. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view thereof.
The numeral l designates the metallic wheel, which in the present instance is made in a single piece. This Wheel is formed with the usual hub 2 for mounting it in the harp and is formed with tivo integral annular flanges 3, separated by a body made up of three annular grooved surfaces, the central one 4 of which is grooved and is deeper, or less in diameter than the outer or side surfaces 5 Which latter are of the same diameter as each other. Along the edges of these surfaces 5 T form tapered Walls 6 extending from the surfaces 5 to the surface of the central groove e. These tapered Walls are alternately arranged, that is, the Wall on the one edge 5 ends at apoint directly opposite the point Where the wall on the opposite edge begins, these tapered Walls all extending in Specification of Letters Patent.

the same direction circumferentially. By this construction the tendency of the Wheel to remain in contact With the Wire is increased and maintained as each quarter turn of the wheel will present to the Wire, one ol' these tapered Walls, thus at all times tending to keep the Wire in contact With the central groove. This is Well. illustrated by the fact that should the Wheel be run in reverse direction, the tendency ci' the wheel would be to ride up on the tapered Walls, thus presenting the side or greater diameter surfaces to the Wire and being held only by the flange, from jumping the Wire.
Tt Will be seen that under all ordinary circumstances, the central groove will contact with the Wire, but should a jar or other cause occasion the Wheel to leave its bearing point, and force either of the side surfaces or greater diameters against the wire, it will immedi ately ride back to the central groove by Way of one of the tapered Walls.
Having thus fully described my invention, What T claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A rotatable electric conductor comprising a metallic trolley Wheel having two integral annular flanges, a body having three annular surfaces, the central surface forming a groove and being of smaller diameter than the side surfaces which latter are el the same diameter and are formed along their edges, each With a series of tapered Walls alternately arranged with relation to those on the opposite edge, substantially as and for the purpose de scribed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
