POST-HOLE BIGGER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALICE A. Porn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vivian, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Diggers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in post hole diggers, and has for an object the production of a device of this character comprising a stationary member provided with means for starting the hole, and a movable member carried thereby, and provided with means by which the hole can be continued to the proper depth.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a post hole digger composed of but few parts, which will be so simple in formation that the device can be manufactured cheaply and sold at a minimum cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the ac companying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a tubular member or sleeve of any desired length, but being preferably the same as the depth of an ordinary post hole, and provided upon its lower end with oppositely disposed diverging arms 2, to the outer terminals of which are bolted, or otherwise detachably secured, segmental startin and gaging blades 8, the opposite vertical sides of which lie adjacent each other, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.

The operation of the device is as follows: The spindle at is rotated by the handle 5 until the drill bit 6 assumes a position adjacent the lower end of the sleeve 1, and the hole is started by digging the blades 3 into the ground. The spindle at is then rotated in the opposite direction, obviously forcing the drill bit 6 into the ground. The bit is rotated until it reaches the level of the lower end of the blades, and the device is then withdrawn from the ground. This operation is repeated until the desired depth of the hole is reached.
Manifestly from the foregoing a post hole digger is provided for which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new is:
A device such as described, comprising a tubular member, downwardly diverging arms extending from one end of the said tubular member, vertically extending segmental plates secured to the ends of the said arms, a spindle threaded within said tubular member, means for rotating the spindle and moving the same vertically within the tubular member, a drill bit secured to the lower end of the spindle, and movable between the blades upon the rotation of the spindle, the vertical edges of each of the segmental blades being positioned adjacent to each other, whereby after the blades have been inserted into the earth, and the bit forced to the lower ends of the said blades, the same will serve when the device is removed for the purpose of extracting the loose earth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
