Description
UNITED STATES PATEEnLQlEllIQEM JOHN W. JARBOE, OF GREEN POINT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED PAPER PAN,
BOWL, BOX, AND DISH.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 99,200, dated January 25, 1870.
To all whom it lmay concern Be it known `that I, J 0HN W. JARBOE, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement -in the Manufacture of Vessels and other Articles of Paper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and which represents a vertical or transverse section of a paper bowl constructed in accordance with my improvement.
Myimprovement is mainly a plicable to th manufacture of paper p owls pans,\ boxes, dishes, and other articles of similar character and the invention consists in making such vessels or articles from paper-board or sheets of paper yby `striking, stamping, or pressing the same into the desired form. This method of manufacturing articles of the character hereinbefore referred to essentially differs from that previously practiced of forming or compressing the same in dies out of paperpulp, which is attendant with many inconveniences and irregularities,` not the least of which is the impossibility Yor difficulty of sccuring a uniform thickness to the pulp in spreading or laying it in the die or mold that gives to the article its required external form. Thiswant of uniformity in the thickness of the pulp produces an irregularity in the article made, and is otherwise objectionablel These difficulties and objections are effectually removed by my invention. Thus, to produce a bowl, as represented in the accompanying drawing, or whatever the article may be, I take paper-board of any suitable description, or a paper sheet of the requisite size and thickness, straw-board being preferable for many articles, and, laying it in or over a mold of the requisite form, bring down on it a stamp or die, and strike, stamp, or press the same into the necessary shape required for the article.- This may be done, if desired, without dampening the board or sheet, and after the vessel or article has been thus produced it may be coated with any suitable waterproof solution, painted, varnished, or otherwise ornamented or treated, according to the purpose it is designed to put the article, or as fancy may dictate.
A vessel, or hollow or dished article, thus made out of paper material, pressed or rolled solid into a sheet form, insures great strength and perfect uniformity of thickness in the article made, and, by such method of manufacture, vessels or articles of the character herein referred to may be manufactured with great regularity and dispatch.
What 4is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The manufacture of bowls, pans, boxes, dishes, and other articles of similar character by striking, stamping, or pressing them to the desired form from paper-board or sheets of paper, substantially as specified.
.JOHN W. JARBOE.
