, Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SMiTrI, i citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvemeiit'in A paratus for Making Cup- Shaped Articles, oilwliich the following is a specification.
This inventionl relates to an apparatus for forming of sheet metal cup-shaped articles of Bythe use of the ap status heretofore known such aiticles con dponly be reduced by asuccession of operations each o` which changed the shape of the article but very little in order to avoid producing wrinkles at the corners of the arti cle which is objectionable. The 'large number of operations heretofore necessary for producing such articles in this manner iendered the cost of the saine unduly high and commercially prohibitive. This diiculty does not arise when drawing down a cylindrical or nearly cylindrical blank as the low of the metal while boing drawn is uniform around the entire blan.v tendency therefore exists'to wrinkle in any particular place.
It is the pur )ose of this invention to enable cup shaped articles of rectangular or irregular form to be drawn to a reater eX- iability of wrinkling the same, thereby reducing the number of steps necessary to bring the ar ticle into its iinal shape and minimizing tue expense accordingly.

While thus drawn the l blank is su ported on its inner side by an inner blank liolc er E which is similar to those in common use, the saine being tubular forni and. fitting with its outer side against the innei side ofthe hollow blank while its lower or front beveled end or gripping face e is arranged opposite the inner part of the bevrled face of the die so that the marginalpart of the blank bottom is clamped between the correspondingl beveled faces d and e of the die and inner b ank holder. The ressure of the latter is only suicient to hold the same .in place and permit the blank to be drawn by the4 unch from the outer side of the inner blan holder inwardly between face's d, e and thence do nwardly ,through the die, whereby the blan is elongated but reduced in a diameter or girth.
The construction and operation of the ,arts thus 'far described are old and Well nown in the art.
In the absence of any otherprovision the reduction in diameter or change from one shape of the cup blank to another would have to be eected by comparatively smallV s inasmuch as large reducing ste' would cause the metal to gather and e outside of the 'ppiiig faces d, e which is objectionable. 'ilrhlis Wrinkling occurs more particularly at the corners of rectangular or irregularly shaped blanks. Toflplrevent the metal from athering and wrin ing at the corners of t e ping faces and still ermt a comparative y large draw of the lank to be made in 4one operation, an outer apparatus whereby the blank isY` the beveled i necessary for the outer blank holder to coin- I claim as my invention:
1. An apparatus for producing articles 40 from cup-shaped blanks, comprising a die having an opening and a beveled face around said o enin a punch adapted to move throng sai opening, an inner blank holder adapted to enga e with the inner side of the body of the blan and having a beveled face l at its front end which coperates with the inner part of the beveled face of the die for clamping the bottom of the blank between the sameJ and an outer blank holder e a ing with the outer side of the bod of the blank holder is provided. In the construction of the outer blank holder shown in Figs. l and 2, the same has the form of a rectangular frame G -whicli fits with its inner side against the outer side .of the blank and is provided on its front or underside a eveled face Ywhich fits the outer part of the beveled ce d of the die. The outer holder thus forms an upward extension of the die above the place where the gri in faces d and e of the die and inner liiiiii holder coperate.
