Letters Patent No. 99,153, dated J (mam r1 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATING- HEATERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. A-. BU'rrrLEs, of the city and county of Milwaukee, and State of \Visconsin, have inventeda new andimproved Steam-Stove; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the line a; a: of fig. 1.
This invention is a steam-heater, so constructed that its outside appearance is that of an ordinary parlorstove. The internal arrangement is' such as to utilize the heat to the fullest extent, with great economy of fuel. The device may be used for heating any number of rooms, by means of a suitable system of steampipes.
In the drawings-- A represents the outer wall of the heater or steamstove;
B, the fire-pot;
O, the grate;
1), the ash-pit; and
E, the smoke-flue, connecting with the. interior of the stove at two points, 0 and 6'.
Inside of the stove is a steam-boiler, composed of two partsone, F, a large vessel in the upper end of the stove, and the other, G, a chamber within the hollow walls of the fire-pot, and extending entirely around the latter. These two parts are connected by a number of pipes, H, and filled from a pipe or funnel, I, at the top of the stove.
The heat from the fire-chamber B, generates steam in the boiler F G, and pipes H H, which is conducted away, for heating-purposes, by means of apipe, J, leading from theupper end of the stove.
K is a safety-valve, one end of the lever of which is connected with the door of the draught L by a chain, c, the other end being connected with acold-air damper, M, by a chain, c. The valve may be set to blow off at any'pressure. When not open, the chain cholds the draught-door L open, and keeps up the heat. \Vhen open, the chain ccloses the draught-door, while the chain 0 opens the cold-air damper, and diminishes the heat. The instrument thus regulates itself, in-
creasing the heat tothe extent required, and constantly maintaining it at that point, so long as there is a proper supply of fuel.
A steam-gauge, try-cocks, &c., may be attached at any suitable point.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The steam-generator F G, constructed of two parts, one surrounding thefire-pot, and the other at the upper end of the stove, the two parts being connected together by pipes H H, substantially as specified. t
' 2. The combination and arrangement of the lever and valve K, and the chains 0 0', with the case of the heater, the draught-door I), and cold-air damper M, substantially as specified.
G. A. BUTTLES.
