To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVIN D. MICKLE, citizen of the United States, residing at Limon, in the county of Lincoln. and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car coupling devices and comprehends certain new and useful improvements in means for releasing coupling pins, the invention having for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of pin lifter 0f the type that is operated from one side of the car, where the operator will be perfectly safe and all liability of mashing his fingers will be precluded.
With this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is an end elevation of a portion of a car equipped with the improved coupler pin lifter of my invention; and, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved pin lifter comprises a rod or bar 1 designed to be secured to the end of a railroad car as shown, the rod 1 being of any desired length and thickness and passing inwardly from its handle end 1a through an eye 2; beyond the part 2, the rod l passes inwardly through a vertically elongated guide slot 3 formed by a loop or otherwise secured to the car and the inner end of the rod is returned upon itself downwardly as shown, this portion o f the rod, designated 4 being notched and passing through aneye or ring 5 connected to the car in any desired way. The end of the rod is nally bent outwardly as indicated at 6 and is provided with an eye 7 `or otherwise formed for` attachment to a coupling pin.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be understood that when the rod l is pushed inwardly, the inclined portion 4 will ride upwardly through the ring 5 and thereby lift the pin to the required height, the parts being held from falling by engagement of the notches of the inclined portion 4 with the ring, which latter thereby constitutes a keeper. When it is desired to lower the pin, it is only necessary to slightly lower the handle end of the rod and disengage the notched portion from the ring 5 and to then pull the rod outwardly, this action resulting in the lowering of the pin as is manifest.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: v
l. The combination with acar provided with a coupler, of a pin lifter embodying a rod provided at one end with an inclined portion and arranged4 at the extremity of such portion for attachment to a coupling pin, a keeper secured to the end of the car,

eye being secured to the end of the car and arranged to assist in supporting the rod in a substantially horizontal position extending along the end of the car, and a vertically elongated loop attached to the end of the car and through which the rod loosely passes, the inclined portion of the rod being formed at different portions of its length with means for engagement by said keeper, substantially as shown and described.
2.
