GUMMED-PAPEE-STICKING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '2, 1911.
Application filed March 16. 1910. Serial No. 549,673.
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that l, Plowman Vt mrrm 'innmx'. citizen of the l nited States, and resident of Mount Vernon. in the county of ll'estchester and State. of New York, have. invented certain new and useful lmproved (iummed-laper-Sticking lVlechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to moistening devices for use in allixine' nstage stamps,
gnnnncr't labels, and the like, and its obpzct Fig. 4 is a front elevation, and Fig. 5 is a section on theline .r:r of Fig. 1.
The casing of the moistener comprises a shell or body portion A'provided with side closures 1 and 2, provided with flanges (a overlapping the body portion A. The side 2 is removable to permit of the insertion of a roll 3 of stamps or labels within the casing, said roll being supported upon a rod 7 secured at one end to the side 1.
Thefront of the casin is formed with an opening 4 to allow the nger of the user to be inserted to feed the end of the rolled strip forward; and thelbottom ofthe casin provided with an opening 5 through which protrudes a moistenin'g pad 6' of sponge, felt, or other suitable material.
, Thecasing is divided by an inclined partition into two compartments C and D, the former containing the gummed roll, and the latter a \vvater reservoir 16L of triangular shape, provided with inwardly projecting flanges 14 upon which is supported a foraminated plate 15 which clamps the edges of the pad 6 upon the flanges 14 of 'thereservoir. A supplemental. perforated metal plate 15 is interposed between the pad 6 and the plate 15 to reinforce the pad. A remov-.
Having fully described my invention, what" front side of the reservoir, holds the plate in place, but permits of its ready removal for the purpose of replacing a worn pad with a new one.
The reservoir is removably held in position within the compartment D of the casing by thumb screws 10 and 10 which extend through openings in the sides of the casing and into threaded openings in a transverse rod 12 secured to the sides of the reservoir. One of the threaded openings of the rod 12 is formed with a vent 13 communicating with the adjacent threaded opening and serving, when the screw 10 is removed as an outlet for air, which it is desirable to expel from the reservoir before filling with water. \Vater is supplied through a suitable fillin opening at one side of the reservoir, said opening being provided with a screw stopper 17.
Loops 8 and 9 project from opposite sides of the casing. said loops being so relatively arranged that one is in convenient position to receive thethumb, and the other the second finger leaving the fore finger free to feed forward the rolled strip of stamps or labels. The moistened pad is rubbed over the surface to receive the stamp or label, and the finger of one hand pushes the stamp'for- 'ward while the other hand presses the stamp upon the moistened surface. The forward .edge 18'of the casing is sharpened to. faciliof the stamptote the removal or tearing o I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters' Patent is:
1; 'Amoistening device comprising g msing having a compartment to receive"-a-'--roll ot gummed stamps or labels, and another compartment to contain, a reservoir, and formed with a finger opening and a opening, in combustion with areservoir within said res er oir compartment, a pad protrudin through said pad opening, ='a perforate plate for securing said pa in' place, and means for detachably securing the reservoir in position.
2. Amoiste'mng device comprising a casing having a compartment to receive a, roll I of gummed stamps or label compartment to contain a reservoir, and
formed with a finger opening and a pad opening, in combination with areservoir within said reservoir compartment, apad prolrudil' g Hu'pugh said pad opening, ngey- Signed at New York-in HIP ennui-y nf .\vw fm'ated plane for securing said pad in place, I Yorknnd' Stafe of .\"vw Yul-k ihisilfil day of and means for detachably securing the reser- March A.
