DENTAL-INSTRUMENT HOLDING AND STERILIZING BRACKET-TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LENA A. KENT and GUTIE H. TUTTLE, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Dental-Instrument Holding and Sterilizing Bracket- Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and improved combined table and sterilizer, which is adapted to be attached to a dentists or surgeons chair or couch, and which is adapted to contain all the instruments and articles necessary for the operator, readily accessible, and in a sterile condition.
An object of this invention is to provide a combined sterilizer and table which will be simple in construction, compact in form, readily accessible, inexpensive to 1nanufacture, and scrupulously clean and aseptic.
A further object of this invention is to provide a dentists or surgeons table with means for sterilizing the instruments with a liquid, and also with means for dry sterilizing said instruments.
These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speci fication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a front end view in elevation; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a view in elevation, taken from the opposite side of that shown in Fig. 2, and partly in section on the line 6-6 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the false bottom in the liquid sterilizing tank.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, and particularly to Fig. 2, there is illustrated in dotted lines, a bracket 1, which is located on the side of the dentists or surgeons chair or couch, and which is adapted to rotatably support a spindle shaft 2 and which in turn carries a table 3. Located on the rear of the table 3, there is provided a casing 4, which has a plurality of drawers 5 slidingly mounted therein. These drawers are of any suitable type, and

preferably are adapted to make the casing 4 air-tight when they are closed.
In Fig. 6, there is illustrated a type of drawer in which the front end 6 is pivotally connected to the body portion, so that it can swing down, in order to make the contents thereof more readily accessible to the operator.
In order that the contents of the drawers 5, such as instruments, may be kept in a perfectly sterile condition, and all of the microorganisms thcreon positively killed, the casing 4 is adapted to be raised to a suitable heat by means of a source of heat 7 located in a casing 8 disposed below the casing 4 and connected thereto by a suitable opening. The source of heat 7 may be of any suitable character, such as a spirit lamp, an electrical heater, or the like, and access is to be had thereto by means of a suitable door in the casing 8. It is often desirable to sterilize or render the instruments aseptic by more positive means than dry heat. For this purpose, there is provided at one end of the casing 4 a suitable tank 9, which is adapted to be removably secured in the casing 4, and is also adapted to contain a suitable liquid, which may be plain water or an antiseptic solution, such as a solution of mercuric chlorid in water. Access is had to the tank 9 through a plurality of openings 10 in, a cover 11, which is hinged to the casing 4 in any well known manner. These openings are closed by valves 12, which are pivotally connected to the cover 11 in such a manner that they are permitted to swing only a limited distance from the openings 10. For this purpose, there are provided levers 13, which are connected to the valves 12 in any suitable manner at one end and pivotally connected intermediate their ends to brackets 14 on the cover 11. Their opposite ends are formed with curved stops 15, which engage the cover 11 and prevent an excesslve motion of the valves 12. r
The solution in the tank 9 is heated by any suitable source of heat, such as a spirit lamp 16. The instruments are inserted through the openings 10 in the cover 11, and are held in an upright position by the points thereof engaging in the mesh of a false screen bottom 17, which is supported in the tank 9 in spaced relation by means of a frame 18.
The cover 11 is provided with a somewhat enlarged opening, in which is adapted to be inserted a glass 19, whereby a liquid may be conveniently heated in a readily accessible manner.
Disposed above the casing 4., there .is provided a shelf 20, which is preferably located in spaced relation therefrom, and is adapted to support any suitable articles, such as cement, plaster, or the like, in a convenient, accessible position.
The front end of the table 3 is provided with a plurality of drawers 21, which are adapted to contain the instruments and the articles necessary to the operator. These drawers are covered by a suitable glass slab 22, which renders the contents of the drawers visible, and at the same time forms an absolutely clean surface on which the operator may place his instruments. Alongside of the front end of the table 3, there is provided an auxiliary shelf 23, which is separated into compartments, and is adapted to contain suitable receptacles 24, in which are placed the various drugs and substances necessary to the operator. Located preferably on the opposite side of the shelf 23 on the front end of the table 3, there is provided a bracket 25, which is suitable to support a spirit lamp or other source of heat.
' Disposed beneath the bracket 25, there is-provided a receptacle 26, which is for the pur pose of containing the silk ligature, and has formed thereon a cutter 27, whereby the silk ligature may be readily cut to the proper length.
Disposed in any convenient position on the table formed by the glass slab 22, there is provided a container 28, which forms a suitable receptacle for the cotton batting used by the operator. Disposed below the front end of the table 3 and supported thereon in any well known manner, there is provided another receptacle 29, which is of a form suitable to contain the rubber dam necessary to the operator.
The casing 1, which has therein the sterilizing compartment, is provided with a suitable door 30, towhich is attached a bur and drill support 31, so that it is adapted to move in and out wit-h the door 30 and thereby render the burs and drills thereon readily accessible when the door is open, and also positively insert the burs and drills in the sterilizing compartment when the door is closed.
The utility and operation of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. The combined table and sterilizer is rotatably supported on the bracket 1, which is secured to the dentists or surgeons chair or couch, and may be swung in such a manner as to be most accessible to the operator. The sterilizing drawers 5 are readily accessible, and the front ends thereof can be swung down so that the instruments therein can be selected under the best possible conditions.
The contents of the drawers 21 which are non-sterilizing are visible through the glass slab 22, which also forms a convenient surface for the operator to work on. When the operator is through, the instruments which he desires to have sterilized can be placed in the sterilizing drawers 5, and the drawers closed, rendering the compartment air-tight. The source of heat 7 may then be started, and the instruments rendered aseptic in a thorough manner. to quickly sterilize the instruments in a thorough manner, the liquid sterilizing tank may be used. If it is desired to hastily obtain some warm or even hot water, it can be taken from the glass 19 which projects into the tank 9. The table contains places and receptacles for all the articles, drugs and instruments necessary for a surgeon or dentist, in a convenient location, where they are readily accessible to the operator; and at the same time, provides sufficient room thereon for the operator to perform any work necessary, aside from the patient, during the course of operation.
While we have shown one embodiment of our invention, we do not wish to be limited to the specific structure or details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, modifications and alterations which we may make within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a table, of a casing connected to said table, a plurality of drawers slidingly mounted in said casing, said drawers having pivoted front portions whereby the contents thereof may be readily accessible, and a heat-generator connected to said table and adapted to supply a sterilizing heat to the contents of said drawers.
2. The combination with a table having a working surface, of a casing connected to said table, a heater for said casing adapted to supply a sterilizing heat thereto, a partition dividing said casing into a plurality of compartments, drawers slidingly mounted in one of said compartments, adapted 'to contain instruments to be sterilized, a holder in another of said compartments, adapted to hold instruments to be dry-sterilized, a receptacle depending from the top of said second-mentioned compartment, adapted to contain a sterilizing liquid, an auxiliary receptacle nested in said first mentioned receptacle and having a screen bottom adapted to maintain instruments in an erect position, and a cover for said receptacle pivotally connected to said casing.
8.
