To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH PAYNE, of Belmont, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Hypodermic Needles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective protector for the point of a hypodermic needle, the protector being adapted to prevent injury to the point by contact with adjacent objects, particularly when the needle is kept in stock or stored.
The invention consists in the improved protector which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of a needle protector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same applied to a hypodermic needle, the latter being shown partly in section. Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification.
Similar reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, 12 represents a tubular hypodermic needle of ordinary construction, the outer end of the tubular shank of the needle being beveled to form the usual pene trating point 13 located at one side of the bore of the needle. The needle is provided with the usual enlarged base 14 which constitutes a coupling member.
In carrying out my invention I provide a protector adapted to prevent injury to the point 13 when the needle is not in use. Said protector is made of a length of fine wire of such size that is adapted to enter the bore of the needle. The wire is bent to form a straight inner member 15 which is insertible in the bore of the needle, a neck 16 and an outer member 17 which is adapted to extend along the exterior of the shank of the needle and is formed at its extremity to bear on the base 14 and limit the entrance of the inner member 15 into the needle, the protector being so proportioned that when the outer extremity of the outer member 17 bears on the base of the needle the neck 16 is out of contact with the point of the needle, as shown by Fig. 2. The outer member 17 is preferably straight and extends parallel with the inner member 15, the outer end of the outer member being bent to form a loop or eye 18 adapted to surround the shank of the needle and to bear on the base 1 1.
A modification is shown in Fig. 3 in which 17 represents the outer member, the main portion of which is helically coiled, the helix being formed to receive the point of the needle, and its outer end being formed to bear on the base 14.
It will be seen that when the described protector is applied to a needle as indicated by Figs. 2 and 3, the point of the needle is protected against injurious pressure against it of any adjacent object. The inner member 15, when inserted in the bore of the needle, is frictionally engaged with the latter and is thereby prevented from loose, endwise movement, tending to withdraw the protector from the needle.
I claim:
1. A hypodermic needle protector having two integral members substantially equal to the length of the needle, one member being straight and adapted to enter the bore of the needle and to be frictionally held in engagement therewith, the other member being adapted to extend along the exterior of the needle and having its end bent to constitute a stop to abut against the enlarged base of the needle, the distance from said stop to the point of connection with the other member exceeding the length of the needle beyond its base, to prevent contact of said connection with the needle point.
2. A hypodermic needle protector composed of a length of wire bent centrally and having one straight member adapted to enter the bore of the needle, and to be frictionally held therein, a neck adapted to extend across the point of the needle and another member connected with the straight member by said neck, and adapted to extend along the exterior of the needle, a portion of the last named member being coiled.
